It depends on what makes the game hard. When I get my ass kicked in a shmup it's because I suck, but other genres can kick your ass be being cheap or vague. I don't mind losing fair and square.

I appreciate a good challenge,. However, one thing I really don't appreciate is when lazy developers use thoughtless methods of improving difficulty. Stripping a game of half its contents and making enemies take 2x longer to defeat is not a harder difficulty mode; it's a load of crap. If I want to challenge myself, I'll do it myself.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Yes, I am absolutely a video game masochist. If the game has a noticeably high level of difficulty, yet I think I have a chance of improving my skills in it and eventually winning the game, then I will continue playing it no matter how many times it kicks my ass.

On a related note, the Tetris: The Grand Master games are some of the hardest puzzle games I've played in my life. The only desire that keeps me going is to eventually reach the level of skill shown in plays like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnLBXol1RmI

Needless to say, I've still got a plenty fucking long way to go.

I don't like being defeated, rather, enjoy learning from defeat and overcoming the challenge

I beat Hellfire on "Yeah Right", The Adventures of Batman and Robin (Genesis), and Redzone. Does that answer your question? ;)

I play Star Soldier which has a dodgy "fly underneath certain parts of the scenery" thing and is hard as hell.
I play Battle Garrega since 2006.
I play Zillion Beatz on normal die, know I won't achieve a 1cc and keep trying.
I play Kyuukyoku Tiger MD on normal.

So basically : yes

Otherwise I enjoy Zanac Neo, Same! Same! Same! (Fire Shark), W-Ring - The Double Rings, Override and Gunfrontier saturn to cool off.

With autofire, I bet.

I play the Japanese arcade ver. without any autofire 8)

I don't consider myself a masochist; when a game starts pissing me off I stop playing it (for at least a while). Like Soldier Blade last night - took a few hours and didn't really make any improvements.

No autofire external autofire, just the one coded in the cart.
I never played the arcade version but I really like the MD one. It's hard as hell (supposedly more than the arcade original) but I know the next credit I will do better  :D.

Hee, I was right.

Not that I really should mind...I'm crazy so I play without that option.

If you try out Daisenpuu / Twin Hawk, be careful - selecting autofire makes the enemies soak up more shots.

that's questionnable, many STGs are memorizers after all.
