Are You a Videogame Masochist?

Post by UnscathedFlyingObject »

I'm was playing Guitar Hero in Hard and the thing was kicking my ass, but damn, I hate those segments with nothing in them. So I say "fuck this, let's crank it up all the way." Man, is it fun! It's been a week and I can't still get past the second song without star power. But I love it!

If only defeat in real life was so pleasurable :(
and you just keep coming back for more despite huge setbacks.

You're asking this question on a forum about one of the hardest genres of videogame in existence?
"I think Ikaruga is pretty tough. It is like a modern version of Galaga that some Japanese company made."

Not everyone enjoys getting kicked in the ass. Some people just say, "fck that was awesome" when they die and try again. Others throw controllers and shit.

I definitely am. My most common complaint about video games is "Don't they offer a harder mode?"

I find that if i'm losing/dying because of my own faults then I don't mind and conitinue to plough through despite the difficulty as the challenge still seems surmountable (examples; SHMUPs, the Resident Evil series) but if i've lost/died because the game was cheap (2d fighting bosses) I usually get pissed off and go on to somthing else.

I think it's pretty awesome except for when I die in Ikaruga. God damn that thing.

Back in the day, I used to smash controllers into the ground. Megadrive controllers would go straight into the floor if I died in Ecco the Dolphin. Hey, can you blame me? That stuff was HARD.

I can just imagine people getting their kicks from Reko's scream. :(

I want my games to be challenging; easy games bore me. Is that a healthy attitude, or does it mean I'm a "gaming masochist"?

No, but I don't get angry like I used to. I still don't enjoy losing, though.

uugh i despise people who throw there controlers. Ive done it once but it was on my bed and it was not hard. Thats how i lost one of my Dreamcast arcade sticks back in the day due to a friend not ebing able to defeat bison

when things turn cheap I swear a lot, but I've never launched a controller. Chucked them down in disgust maybe

I've kicked a bottle of water once. And I scream profanities from time to time, but that's as far as I go. I've never thrown a controller :)

And this remembers last week I got MotoGP3 on the PS2 (usually regarded as the best game on the series), and I was trying to play the game on simulation mode (and I've never ride a Bike in real life... I don't even have a driver license :D), so I kept on failing and failing and failing... and loving everything, I think I've played it 3 hours straight practicing on the same track, failing a lot but progressing up until I actually managed to get the hang of it and finish a race... in 5th nonetheless.

More than once I shout some profanity when I fell from the bike, and the wife came and said "Why are you playing this? You are getting stressed" and I was like "Not stressed... this thing is lots of fun, you have no idea"... which puzzled her even more :)

So yes, I guess I am a masochist :)

It depends if you consider 'masochism' a value added term. Personally I see nothing wrong with admiting to being a masochist. This is the 21st century after all

No. I get challenged all the time. I don't need much extra coming by way of entertainment.

I find that being easy makes a game boring because it doesn't require as much thought or action from the player.

You aren't a gaming masochist until you've beaten Dungeon Magic on the NES. You pussies.

You're asking this on a forum where Dodonpachi: Dai Ou Jou gets nothing but praise, even from Rob.

I don't think there are many here who aren't gaming masochists =P

Well said. Playing a difficult but well-designed game is not masochism. Playing piss-poor impossibly-hard games that are no fun is masochism (i.e. 8 Eyes).

I just keep playing these games I almost never will beat.
Still they're satisfying.

Since I like playing them I think I can't be considered a masochist.

If playing games you can't beat by default makes you a masochist, well then I am in. :P
