Only if you can't argue with the guys' reasoning I suppose.
Also I am very passionate about this subject so I think it is something that should be discussed.

Seriously, if you can argue with some of the things he says please do.
It's not like he's "GOD", but I just like (and understand) his thinking.
who says i want to argue? i have no idea what points that dude raises other than 1 vid which i had previously seen about sharia law. why don't YOU go to the effort of typing up his main points and write a mini-essay on the subject.
You're right, I should make an essay or the like myself about this instead of reffering to his youtube rants. I'll admit being lazy though, and he just says about my every thought in his vids.
you don't know me, or my views on religion
True.
But can't we discuss this anyway (if you want)?
but as soon as you type "LOL @ the god idea" i don't think it's gonna be a conversation worth having.
I purposely made the topic title provocative. Something of an attention whore here I suppose. ()
(normally i don't have a problem with shit theads, i just thought you were a cut above that sort of stuff)
I set the wrong tone perhaps (well actually I really did here :(), but these kinda discussions are my fave.

yeah, i suppose so. but as you've noted, it would be best under a more neutral thread title, to get a good balanced discussion going  you can't expect people not to low-ball you if they think you're doing the same to them. i got that from some sandal-wearing dude :P

personally, i'm quite fascinated with religion. but what is suprising to me is that you have normal atheists, who say they don't believe in god, and tend to mind their own business. and then you have atheists who say they don't believe in god, and that believing in god is one of the worst things to do in the world, and can't stop telling other people what to do or how to think.

most people are born with two ears and one mouth. use them in that ratio :P

Well I would mind my own bussiness more if the people believing in this stuff weren't forcing their believes and lifestyle on me themselves.

you're saying that believing in god "doesn't make sense to me". does this even matter? can you see that religion (whether you believe or not) - for 99.9% of people - has a positive affect on them as a human being? i've got a fair few religious friends, and they're good, decent people. most atheists i know can't SHUT UP about religion

just start with #1, you'll get the message.

Subjective? Well certainly, but no more than people making up a divine being. And this makes more sense to me.

I think we have some common ground there.

Religion was invented (well the one most in the west are living to anyway) to give people a moral guide. Even without the existance of the "God" in these stories, the moral guide would still be a valid one though.

religion was a good idea when it was just the basic laws, probably still is

doubt most of those who claim and claimed to be very religious followed them though

i'm glad you're not as closed-minded as michaelm on the subject :)

and yes, i agree on the moral guide. or to put it another way: what does atheism teach people about how to be a good person?

there are millions and millions of religious people in the world, and if they're not doing me any harm, i'm happy to let them do what they want. no need to start fights

as far as people pushing religion onto you, i remembered there was one incident in which this did happen to me once. if you want tips on how to offend a christian, pm me

Reasonable, valid argumens should ALWAYS be taken in consideration.
One can't claim to have knowledge about something without knowing "the other side".
what does atheism teach people about how to be a good person?
Does it even claim to teach? Atheism isn't pretending there's something. Religion is.
there are millions and millions of religious people in the world, and if they're not doing me any harm, i'm happy to let them do what they want. no need to start fights
I agree, everyone should mind their own bussiness and not force any thoughts on someone else.
Discussion should be open though.

Says the person who's forcing thoughts on other people.

And even if you don't want to, everyone still does to some extent.

that's true. but being an atheist doesn't exactly enrich someone's life. also, i wouldn't really use the word "pretending". i think a better word is "claiming", when in context.
Discussion should be open though.
with a bit of tact though :P :)
