I have several, but don't actually carry them with me.

Long ago in days where I used to be roaming the streets (say 15 years ago or so) I sometimes did carry Balisong knife along.

On one occassion I got a knive in my face by some "new" Dutchmen,
and I pulled mine (which was considerably bigger :)).

I just gave it to a friend of mine present there though as it could only provoke the other guy stinging me. Luckily he put away the knive as well and we fought without stuff. Luckily I kicked his ass. :P

Since then though I really see no point as it only provokes more and since I really won't stab anyone ever I don't see the point.

It is more dangerous than helpful for me.

who carries a knife for protection????

how does that work? do you hang it on your belt like a deterrent???

im sorry but if someone comes at me with a knife they get whatever they want.
nothing i carry is worth more than my life.

and ive had knives pulled on me twice and had a friend slashed across he arm because he was mr tough guy ( all that was over was a baseball cap when we were 16)

if you carry a knife for protection you are just as big a prick as those who carry them as status symbols or for mugging

you deserve to be stabbed and left bleeding to death in some gutter

just my personal view

dont get me started on the right to bear arms...

maybe its a british thing but i aint taking on a crackhead with a knife in anything less than a challenger 2!!!

Some people do carry knifes for protection I don't see much reason in it though unless you need an advantage over a fist fight.even if you win you get more jail time for using a weapon.

Well, you obviously don't stick around waiting for the po after you've just stabbed a guy.

I used to carry a Swiss Army knife for the tools, but now I just keep it in my car. The only thing I ever really needed on the spot was the bottle opener (and I can just get a key chain one easily)

i think you have to be real evil and cold to stab someone.. i like playing with weapons but using them against other humans is just wrong..

a gun is definitely more of a detached weapon than a knife .. so mebbes thats why they more easy available than guns cos you'd have to be a real sick fuck to use a knife .. i'm not saying shooting someone is not as bad as stabbing someone but i imagine it would be a an easier thing to actually do..

my mates brother died in glasgow last year of stabb

I have a couple in the house, but would never keep one on my person. If you are caught carrying a weapon in N.Ireland its a serious offence and possible jail time can result, that being said I do collect samurai swords from my martial arts days.

Knife crime amongst the eastern european citizens in a neigbbouring town has become quite bad recently, it seems nearly all of them carry something.

I agree with Mr-Monks, if someone comes at me with a knife they can have whatever they want, even the gf :D

I've carried a knife since I was seven. Not to school of course, but at all other times. For utility use mainly though I'd stab a fool if it was like that.

If you want to carry a weapon but it's illegal where you live, I suggest a screwdriver. Great tool for screwing in/out screws and it works well for stabbing. Gangstas on probation/parole commonly do this. FYI

Yeah, it's a very good idea to get your vehicle cleaned out of those knives...what if you get pulled over by law enforcement and they decide to search your car anyways? Then you're in some deep shit...no amount of explanation and/or excuses will get you out of that particular situation.

Just common sense here...

It's hard for me to think of an explanation to carry around a screwdriver at all times, but with a flashlight I can say I might be out late. It's more for hitting bones rather than for stabbity soft-tissue damage.

I would not keep knives in my car though. Maybe a baseball bat, just have to remember to have a ball and glove to go along with it in case I ever get my car searched. The steering wheel lock might work OK in a pinch also.

I have carried one as a matter of habit for work, and as such I only keep it on my work uniform (in my pocket). It is never to be found in my regular clothes.

It is really handy though for opening those impossible-to-get-open bags of sweets or the like, to stop me spraying wine gums all over the floor :)

That actually did happen. There were no knifes, but I had the swords in the trunk and my friend had brass knuckles that he hid under my seat because he's an idiot. The search was definitely illegal since the only thing the drug dog did was wag his tail and look at the officer. The swords were just for display and the only one that had a tongue (or whatever it's called) was the buster sword since it's so huge it would probably just fall right off the handle if it didn't. The guy asked to whom the brass knuckles belonged and that was the only mention of that. It was obviously some sting trap because they were playing good cop bad cop, but they were really horrible at it :? I think they were probably doing a meth crackdown and since they didn't find any drugs they just let us go. The only reason I mentioned the knifes in the first place was because this thread reminded me that they were still in my car, but I already took them out right after I made my original post.

EDIT:

In that case why not just carry a baseballbat or a golf club or something like that? It could look pretty cool on the right guy.

I'm not advising shit. And people getting arrested "all the time" hasn't reduced the screwdriver's popularity any.

I'm not sure what the difference between advising and suggesting is then, I guess. It wasn't a personal attack, there's no need to get defensive about it or anything :?

I knew a guy from southern Ohio (near the WV border) that always had a knife on him. He had several knives of various sizes, intended purposes, and legal statuses.

I thought it was weird that he always carried a knife; he thought it was weird that everybody else didn't do the same. To his credit, though, he did use it all the time, albeit for trivial tasks (opening mail, opening hot dog packages, slicing apples...).

Gutting chickens?

Anyhow, I'm sure that if you're a gangsta on parole that you'd better have a good reason to carry a screwdriver. If it's somebody with no arrest record, I can't see why you wouldn't get away with it. Better not to carry it around just for protection, though.

Personally, the pen is underrated.

I use it for opening those damn blister packages. Nothing satisfies more than being able to open an item stuck in one as soon as your purchase.

I carried a simple folding pocket knife everywhere for years, until finally I realized it was dead weight and I wasn't going to use it for anything. I have various knives at home, but who doesn't.

I also worked as a cook for years, so long super-sharp knives aren't that impressive anymore. Just reminds me of chopping vegetables or portioning striploin.

I remember the advice that in case of self-defense keys are supposed to be good weapons too, if you put them between your thumb and index finger (putting them in your fist might get your hand ripped open if you hit someone like that). I read that in a blog post from some guy living in Johannesburg, so I guess he knew what he was talking about.

Anyways, I usually try to avoid dodgy areas like the plague anyways. And one little thing I learned when I was almost robbed in broad daylight (my younger brother was with me and his clothes pretty much screamed "Mug me!"): RUN AWAY. Muggers might be impulsive when it comes to attacking you, but I highly doubt an agressor will actually run after you, unless you really did something bad.
