Who carries a pocket knife?

Post by Pixel_Outlaw »

I'm doing a study on how many men carry pocket knives. I live in Montana and recently a college professor asked how many students carry a pocket knife for utility use. Needless to say every male student had one on them, myself included. I'm trying to find out if it is more common to have a knife in some regions more than others. Here you are given a knife at a fairly young age and it is assumed that maybe 90% of men carry on this tradition.

I carry a Victorinox Classic as a utility tool, it's attached to a bulky wallet-keychain, making it useless for self-defense. Many small weapons are illegal to carry where I live, so all I have for protection is a AA mini-Maglite on my hip. I'm too scrawny and lack any sort of training to use it effectively though.

What? Carry a knife with you everywhere? God no.

I'm lucky if I remember to carry my keys.

I carry one. This is my knife of choice, it's a compact folding model.

This is my model:

I see how it could come in handy when you want to stab a bastard or two (joking) but carrying a knife around is against the law in most public buildings here.

I have what is probably the smallest, most basic model of Swiss army knife. Not useful as a weapon. It functions as pencil sharpener / flat-head screwdriver. I carry it on my key ring.

I usually at least keep one in my backpack. I don't keep one on me often though, it tends to freak people where out where I live now, darn city slickers.

I don't care much for serrated blades they loose their edge and they become very difficult to sharpen. I've heard that one must use a rod shaped sharpener to get into the serrations.

I used to carry a 3" bladed knife when I lived in Dallas & I was traveling constantly.

Then I moved to MO, only travel one day a week & all I carry now is one of those All N One tools with the pliers & knife etc. for use at work.

I own a knife, but it's a gator hunting knife that has an 18 inch blade, not something I'd carry around in public and not get hauled off to a padded cell for.

I carry a german army issue folding knife. Has a good blade and some useful extras like screwdriver and corkscrew. I'm in Sweden, so there are bears and stuff that'll eat the unarmed.

I was given a knife back in middle school when I used to be part of the boy scouts. We did, you know, out doorsy stuff, in the more natural areas of Oregon, USA. I still have that knife though, a really cheap folder that locks, and use it for cutting open stuff. It usually stays home though, I don't carry it around. I'll get a newer nicer knife sometime but the old one carries some sentimental value.

i got one of them butterfly knives but it never leaves the house ..knife culture in scotland is no joke and carrying one on the street only leads to you more likely being a statistic of crime or ending in jail as there is pretty much a zero tolerance on carrying knives on your person up here now.. when were at school we all had knives now i doubt you'd be allowed a swiss army knife..
home protection only for me..

I do, I really do, for utility use (protection? I can't see how a pocket knife could do any god for protection) although I lost it / forgot it (a normal vitorinox) in a mountain cabin 7 months ago. Since then I've been in the Royal Norwegian Navy so I haven't got around getting a new one yet (kind of buissy, kind of low on cash).but I've missed it a lot.

I was walking down a quiet street in the little town nearby to where we live, when I passed by the most bizzare shop ever (for the UK) It was a little thrift shop that was absolutely packed with retro videogames, old camcorders and a plethora of knives and guns. Lol, WTF. I didn't dare go in, but if i did, I imagine the guy would have gone "WELCOME! WHAT ARE Y' BUYIN'?"

I'll have to go back on Saturday to confirm my suspicions.

I sometimes carry a small knife that I take to work, I tend to forget I have it in my rucksack and carry it around to all kinds of places. I don't carry one for protection though, instead relying on cowardice induced superhuman speed to get me out of trouble.

I got mugged only a few weeks ago, and still don't intend to carry anything for protection.

I don't hardly ever have one one my person, but I have a butterfly knife and a big hunting knife and probably some other stuff buried in my car somewhere. I don't have them for protection, I just throw shit in my car for whatever reason and then never clean it out. I probably should, since butterfly knifes are illegal :? . I also have a trunk full of swords. Like seven of them. One is a replica buster sword. I should probably do something with those too...
