A homebrew version of Radiant Silvergun for the Nintendo DS.
It looks worse than the abomination that was DDP 2 :(

The pix reminded me of judgement silversword... but the movie raised my hopes.
It doesn't look bad at all, expecially since it is in alpha stage (it is, right?).
Glitchy but the programming up to now looks solid, and there's not much like that on the DS.
I'll keep track of it, thanks for the heads up ;)
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

It will probably end up looking a lot better than this. For the record it does look pretty bad in the current stage
People I have dealt with successfully: bleem (x2), spazicon, sven666, sparky, iatneH, Dragon1952, kozo, Ghegs

Understand that this is being developed with the PAlib library, which means that right off the bat there will be limitations in what can be done in regards to the development of the game. I could be totally wrong here but it sounds like you guys may have no idea about doujin development on the NDS and what people have done with it so far so i will try to explain a little.

First up you cant really go expecting something on par with a commercial game as no homebrew dev has access to the official nintendo SDK. Secondly, you should know that the DS has a maximum of 4MB RAM, yeah thats not a typo, you have have a full 4MB of RAM to work with. But.. hes currently rewriting the engine to load sprites, levels, and music, all from FAT.

What retrohead has done so far is pretty good considering the project is in alpha stage and far from finished. Take into consideration that what you've seen so far is just a scratch off the surface on what he has planned for the game.

So while some of you may be thinking it's the biggest pile of shit you have ever seen. Look at 90% of all other DS homebrew written with PAlib and you might change your mind.

Fuck it.... this looks nice enough for a dumbed down handheld version of this classic.
Some people complain too much.
I'd buy this for DS if it was commercial...

I wouldn't trade Judgement Silversword for it though...

Maybe someone with a wonderwitch dev kit could make this for the Wonderswan?

My only doubt is whether or not he will continue the work on this - most homebrew projects die pretty early. But since this looks like a pretty ambitious project, thumbs up.

Obviously they won´t be able to do a full, proper port of the game, but I´ll take some free portable shmup action any day, and having sprite rips from RSG in it certainly helps.

What make Radiant Silvergun that good is the extremely polished level design. If you change it then it's not Radiant Silvergun anymore even though the graphic looks like it.

Is this important ?

I don't remember anyone who has ever cared that Space Harrier for Amstrad CPC or Final Fight for C64 were far away from the original.

Homebrews are like demos. Devs do them only for the challenge, not to provide gamers and ROM kiddies free ports. :D

you should know that the DS has a maximum of 4MB RAM
If you add up the Saturn's VDP1's framebuffers (256KB*2) and texture DRAM (512KB), VDP2's DRAM (512KB), main CPU's SDRAM (1MB) and DRAM (1MB), and the sound CPU's DRAM (512KB), the answer is...

The screenshots don't look bad IMO, but how would it be to play a shmup with a gap between the top and bottom halves of the screen?

Exactly. It doesn't help the dev to call it "Radiant Silvergun DS" either as that sets his audience's expectations astronomically high, and they will rip him to shreds even more when he releases the game and it turns out to suck.

M-KAI did not attempt to mimic the mechanics of RSG in any way, and he was creative and skilled enough to make one Hell of an awesome new game. However, I seriously doubt this effort will come remotely close to producing something of JSS' calibre though.

Haha, old-school computer port players were like pigs in shit, weren't you? :D

Even so, Space Harrier is still Space Harrier with obstacles and enemies made up of lines. In fact it seems like a pretty good port; it's refreshing to see the relative size of things kept the same while the frame rate stays acceptable and without resorting to gigantic colored blocks.

Final Fight still looks like a fighting game (this is the C64 we're talking about), but it's not going to be the same without the same controls and moveset. U.S. Gold (more like Japanese Gold in this case) had a license, though, so they could've packed bean curd into Final Fight boxes and sold it if they had a license to do that, too.

"RSJ DS" seems more like Final Fight there, without a license. If it doesn't have the level design of the original, heck. At least it'll be good practice for the creator, I guess (perhaps not, since I just read it's using some game making library).

I'm really surprised that the DS is capable of handling this, especially considering RSG was one of the last Saturn games which was capable of emulating.

Yay, enthusiasm!

At least this guy gets off his ass and does something; even if it turns out to be shit, it´s just homebrew anyways, it´s not like he came here and claimed to do a perfect port of it. (He should have picked a different title that "Radiant Silvergun DS", since this is exactly what makes people think this will be if they don´t read his post.)

This. Let´s not mix up the world of professional port development with one-man hobby projects here.

(Although homebrew programs like NitroTracker or DreamZZT blow 90% of the commercial DS releases out of the water.)

While calling this 'Radiant Silvergun DS' is ridiculously arrogant, that these guys have the motivation and desire to do this kind of thing is fairly impressive.

That's the problem here. But sooner or later they'll come across Treasure who will surely have their say about it.

But then again, the start looks promising. Preemptive bashing = not good.
But then again, this is shmups.com after all :D

I'm not too surprised to see the 101st Chairborn sitting around complaining while someone else makes a game. Keep up the encouragement!

But yeah, he still shouldn't call is RSG :?

Hi back... not sure what ':3' means, but I think at least your XOP Black thread had some good comments and discussion.
