Raiden 3, Ether Vapor, Blue Wish, Exception, Cho Ren Sha, Exceed, Samidare... there are hundreds of good PC shmups (and thousands of not-so-good ones :? )

Warning Forever, the only shmup in which I actually like fighting bosses lol

And Kamui, which is... well... amazing.

There might be more, but I can't remember right now. Then again, I never looked too much into PC shmups... MAME and PS2 were enough for me. :3

EDIT: And how could I forget... check out the Knight of Cancer demo. :D :D :D

Alas, Ikaruga is going...

If you like the RNG turned up to 11 ..

I've played lots of PC shooters and the only one I could really get into was BWR Plus. Everything else didn't have enough going for it .. CRS68k had no score system from what I could tell, Warning Forever got boring, and I can't stand Touhou's 5 minute boss fights, with bosses that are little girls in maid dresses. :/

You should get back to work on your shmup/RPG hybrid, with that awesome 'random number decides if you get killed by a bullet when hit' feature. :P

+ The Reap, Jets'n'Guns, Prototype, Tyrian, Steel Saviour... + some great borderliners like Silpheed and Novastorm.
Before Pope John Paul died he decreed that Aliens were also GOD's creatures and we should treat them with respect.

Ditto.

I also love this game because the Heaven mode (especially with accel off ) is perfect for noobs at manic shooters, like myself, to get use to them.

Nah, it should have Garegga like rank features.

High level = enemy bullets have an aura
No bomb use = enemies have charge attacks and use screen clearing bombs

1.) I still work on it when I can find the time.
2.) That feature, though terribly misrepresented/understood by that statement is already implemented and working fine.
3.) I really like XOP Black and play it quite a bit, I just find that the slow, round bullets tend to seem aimless and random. It makes the patterns all muddle together until it feels like I'm just dodging randomly generated blobs. It's still a very fun game though. I guess next time someone asks for good pc shmups I won't recommend it? Is that what you wanted?
4.) No ranks, just character and enemy levels.
5.) There's no bombs in my game, so that wouldn't be applicable.

6.) Back on topic, MAME?

I just thought I would take care of two posts in one and reply to both of you at once, though the chance that my game will actually come out ever is rather slim.

On Topic: it's been a long while since I played it, but wasn't Zone 66 shmuplike? If I remember correct it was top-down but was free roaming...

Also, Chain is a rather unique/fun shmup that gets somewhat old after awhile. But it's free and is different. In fact, I'm going to go use it procrastinate instead of doing my homework.

I can't believe only one mention for Kamui...awesome game. (although the laser can make it easy at times)

Here's my list:

Ether Vapor
rRootage (and other Kenta Cho/ABA games)
Cho Ren Sha
Shoot The Bullet
Kamui
Imperishable Night

I like BWR too but barely played it. I'm sure there is more but I'm not much of a PC player

And there is always emulation which gets you almost any game you want

I feel confident that I'll have a demo out before Duke Nukem Forever if that's what you need to know...assuming I find someone to make some halfway decent art at some point.

Let me recommend Trouble Witches and Bike Banditz.

As far as vertical games, there are also many good examples. Apart from many doujin games, you have the 3 Shikigami no Shiro titles, for instance. Visit this forum where I posted many videos of doujin games I've tried.

Of course, you can play the best shmups ever in MAME, including very recent games. And there are still many to be emulated in the future!

Finally, try Raycrisis. I've spent many many hours with this one:
