I don't agree with collecting sealed games at all. Its rather pointless.

Like, if you're collecting art, you can at least look at the art and show it off. That is its purpose. I guess to an extent the same could be said for collector cars, coins, etc.

Videogames aren't made to be "displayed", they are made to be played. When Time Warner Interactive of Japan made Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru, they weren't thinking, "This game will be rare and people will put it on their mantels!" No, they were thinking, "We sure hope this game does well and that a lot of people enjoy it!" Sadly, they went out of business after the first miniscule pressing.

Regardless, I think there are two types of collectors:
Those who collect to play, and those who collect to be impressive. And I guess to an extent there is an inbetween (shit, I own 2 Navi HiSaturns, though I did buy the intial one with the intent of having a portable Saturn! But my Saturn shmup collecting and all that? Only doing that to play it all and eventually make a website for it).

So... there.

I collect, but I dont see the point in not playing them, none of mine are sealed and they all get used sometime, as long as its in good nic it is a collectors item

so you may as well play the hell out of it

People do this when it comes to sneakers too: one pair to wear, one to store and another pair to put on ice.

I stopped collecting a while ago, since you have to have lots of money (to throw away :P) to support such a habit. But I have managed to build up quite a library over the years. And everytime I bought a new shmup (or any game for that matter), I always played it first before adding it to my collection because I like to make sure that it's a game that Iam going to keep. I don't keep games, that I don't like, in my library no matter how rare or expensive they are. I collected for my personal taste and not for showing off.

And if I had the money, I probably would've bought three copies of each as well. 8)

For me, it's not about collecting. It's about buying games that I won't seriously (or even semi-casually) play for years, like Raiden III or Radirgy.

Whatever games I own that are still "mint" (or in Gitaroo Man's case, still sealed) aren't so because of the need to preserve, but out of laziness and me not wanting to play games I paid for

I do however back-up some of the rather hard-to-come-by releases I own like Border Down and Blast Wind, to put as little wear on the original discs as possible, either via repeated play or taking the games with me during travel.

Good god!

People collect sealed games even when they are fairly ordinary, high street games! Great site, and I admire enthusiasm and passion for anything that doesn't involve anything too unpleasant, but it does seem to be just lists of people collection in most cases...

EDIT: OK - I realise now, non-members can only look at collection lists.

So what nothing really... so no need to get upset!

I was shocked, but do quite admire such dedication to a kind of collecting that must get quite a bit of stick.... I don't think I was derogatory at all.

Like I'd be in any position to criticise when I've spent so much on shmups!

So you collected sealed copies of games you already have opened copies of? Fair enough.

That's what I need! Some Sven666 balls!

Aventus would hate to know of all the games where I've broken the seal and chucked out the box thanks to a lack of space. (Tiny flat and countless boxed press samples of utterly turd games...)

Remember Vern diagrams?

Imagine two separate circles:

( Games I have collected )

( Games I play in MAME )

That sums up my situation pretty well right now

Having only one copy of a game and refusing to play it because it's sealed must be terrible. These things are meant to be played! At least if you have one sealed and one unsealed... But then, instead of spending money on the same game, why not buy something else?

I like collecting games, but I'm a player first. So is most people from what I can see.

I only collect what I'll play, there's no fun in it for me if I collect a game I know I'll never ever play (ok Hydlide is one shining example I have of having a game I won't play, but it was given to me for free), I have Saturn games in near mint condition, some platformers and enough shooters, I won't let them sit and gather dust, those bad boys get played regularly.

I just bought a sealed copy of R-Types (PSX) at a local store for $20.

I bet some of those folks at Sealed game heaven would cringe to know that I opened it as soon as I got back to my car, considering it's slightly hard to come by.

It would never enter my mind to leave a game sealed, because I would never buy a game that I didn't want to play. That being said I DO collect games, but to me I guess that just means keeping my games in good condition, not keeping ANY crap, not trading-in games and keeping my games on a shelf in alphabetical order ha ha.

P.S. This is my first post here!

Welcome bostongeorge - it's a nice place to be and it sounds like you've got the right attitude to gathering games!
