Like, if you're collecting art, you can at least look at the art and show it off. That is its purpose. I guess to an extent the same could be said for collector cars, coins, etc.
Videogames aren't made to be "displayed", they are made to be played. When Time Warner Interactive of Japan made Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru, they weren't thinking, "This game will be rare and people will put it on their mantels!" No, they were thinking, "We sure hope this game does well and that a lot of people enjoy it!" Sadly, they went out of business after the first miniscule pressing.
Regardless, I think there are two types of collectors:
Those who collect to play, and those who collect to be impressive. And I guess to an extent there is an inbetween (shit, I own 2 Navi HiSaturns, though I did buy the intial one with the intent of having a portable Saturn! But my Saturn shmup collecting and all that? Only doing that to play it all and eventually make a website for it).
