Gun Games for the Famicom/NES

Post by undamned »

And I thought I was content w/ Duckhunt:

It appears that "Hyper Shot" is the name of the Guncon and "Space Shadow" is the actual game title.

Here's a nice boxed set if anybody wants one: http://page13.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/r45024950

So what other "zapper" games flew under the radar for FC/NES?

I think Mechanized Assault allowed the Zapper. I remember liking it more than Operation Wolf's NES port, though it's been a while.

edit: yep, seems it does: http://www.nesguide.com/genre/lightgun/

Gotcha! was actually fairly fun. Used the dpad and Zapper in tandem.

Gotcha! is a cool idea (it simulated a paintball capture the flag match) but it's also disgustingly easy. Even on the hardest difficulty I can loop the game over and over until I just quit. And it's not just me, anybody could who felt like it.

Barker Bill's Trick Shooting and Hogan's Alley are superb. Both are made by Nintendo and feature a handful of different mini-games (like Duck Hunt). And, the Duck Hunt dog even makes an appearance in Trick Shooting, and you can shoot him!

To the Earth is an unfairly difficult but interesting game. You shoot at ships that zoom around in space FAR too fast.

Chiller is horrible but allows you to play two-player using two Zappers. Unfortunately, the hit detection is completely fucked. I still kind of like it though.

Although, the best Zapper game I've ever played is Freedom Force, hands down. It's got lots of different levels, excellent challenge, upgradeable weapons, and plays more like the arcade light gun games of the time. And, you actually get to shoot PEOPLE. It's great fun.

except for the Chiller part, which I have never played but always wanted to because of tortured people in the background, andi's post is spot on.

Gumshoe is pretty cool as well.
it's a sidescrolling game where you shoot the main character to make him jump or whatever, along with shooting the enemies. unique, to say the least. I never beat it, though.

There was one of these you-know-where for a while...never was terribly big on gun games so I never got it. Hmm, it looks pretty sweet (of course I'd seen a picture on the box, but it looks better than I had assumed it would).

I can do without the biker helmet, though...

Thanks, ud for another great find.
You'd think that 20 years later there would be a cooler official light gun with more precise aiming and wireless support.
Yeah, you'd apparantly be a fool for thinking that
I would love to wow my nintendo fanboy friend with this gun. He'd go berserk!

ps, I can't find nay screenshots/videos. All I could find was one guy claiming to have played it.

I've wanted to play Gumshoe for a while. It sounds awesome but I've been having trouble finding a copy. Another similar Zapper/platformer game is Baby Boomer (it's an unlicensed game, Color Dreams or Tengen possibly). A baby walks through various levels and you have to shoot the enemies off from him. I have no opinion on it since I haven't played it in probably 10 years.

bayou billy has a couple of gun stages in "operation wolf" style that are actually pretty decent (for NES gungames).

Didn't Bayou Billy suck? I think my brother bought that game at the swapmeet, but it ended up being crap. But yeah, Gumshoe was a pretty interesting game.

The Konami Lone Ranger game also used the Zapper, IIRC. But only on some stages.

Sounds like Sega's Laser Ghost (I think; haven't really played that one) or Exidy's Cheyenne (fun with its retardedly humorous ambience).

It's just way too *#%$ cheap and difficult (read:impossible).

The JP version "Mad City" is supposed to be a lot more reasonable, at least the beat 'em up segments.
