RealBout c.f. - 60,763,985 - Slave (Ixion) - 1-Phase 2 [PCB] US

Reached the Phase 1 Boss for the first time and had only one bomb left. Killed him anyway and got pretty far (I think) in Phase 2. Phew.

Phase 2 is incredibly fun. One of my favorite shmup level. There are two very mean bosses waiting for you at the end.

Alluro - 138,571,864 pts - Raiden mk-II - ALL [MAME] Japan

Watching the Insanity DVD replay of RF Jet in the Raiden Fighters Onslaught package helped me implement some insane bonus combos and the appearance of enemies in Level 30 and Phase 1.

The AVI replay link for this high score is http://forum.shmups.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1835
The age of Alluro and JudgeSpear is over.

Furthest I've got so far, have played a total of 2:53:59 according to MAME! Did eventually beat my previous score when I was playing as the Fairy of all things, but this is way ahead. Don't feel like I'm really in control of such a fast ship tho'...

For level 40, quickly destroy those bombers coming out from right/left, and they will each give you a bomb. I think you can get five bombs all together. You can use them at Phase one, and the Phase one boss.

I love level 40.

Can't seem to make it out of Phase 1 alive, but I have so much work to do in all previous levels it doesn't matter.

Vorpal - 49,714,880 - Ixion - 1-Phase 2
Mame US version

I stopped using Ixion after this run, though. Trying to maneuver myself between bullet patterns on phase 2, with such a fast ship, is just not working out.

Blue Javelin is my current ship of choice, gonna get crackin'

can someone please help me:

so i just downloaded the u.s. version of rfjet mame recognises it and everything is great it loads up till i get to a screen with the title on it and a msg saying 'now updating, please wait a moment' and a counter that counts down from 1000, ive tried waiting till it counts down but nothing happens. Im using the newest version of mame, am i doing something stupid or do i need to do something not obvious to make it work?

Thanks guys

I'm not sure if this works on all the problems like that but you can hit TAB and go to RESET or something like that and it should start working. That's what helped when I had that problem.

New Score:

Sparky - 20,617,580 - Ixion - 1-Level 10 [US] PCB

Not my best, but it will do.

I'd prefer the Judge Spear's Slave for all RF games but I find the Ixion's Slave has a much better speed in RFJ.

Japanese Version:
Icarus - 70,706,486 - Slave (Ixion) - Phase 1 [MAME]

Not bad for a night's worth of play -_-;; The only factor that helped me get this score was RF1 experience, getting 100k Medal Mode correctly in stage 1, and not dropping the Medals at all (although chasing after them was the cause of some of the deaths).

Very bad technically, no thought to chaining bonuses, and several very silly deaths in simple places. Missed a bunch of miclii - don't even know where half of them are. Took the route 01 - 05 - 15 - 30 - 40 - Phase1.

does the medals work in the same way as garegga medals i.e. you need to collect them all or they go back to 10pts?

No, the Medals in RFJ are very specific. There are two types of point items in RFJ, Emblems (worth 10pts in singles, and combine into larger Emblems) and the classic gold Medals, which require a secret access trick.

You'll notice that when you have a Slave in support, that Emblems will start chasing you and combining near one of your Slaves. Try to combine lots of Emblems into a MAX Emblem that is worth approx 2mil. Make sure you keep at least one Slave alive, or else Emblems will stop chasing you.

Once you pick up the 2mil Emblem, try to get nine 10pt Emblems on screen at once (easiest done by finding a miclus and not picking up the Emblems it releases). When nine Emblems are onscreen they'll explode, signalling that you're now in Gold Medal Mode. Now enemies and miclii will release gold bar shaped Medals that work on incremental principle - they start at 10k and go up to a maximum of 100k.

You can activate Gold Medal Mode as early as stage 1 and get them up to 30,000 at the end of the stage.

RFJ is a fast game. Think Raiden DX on copious amounts of speed, tons of caffiene and fifty packs of Pro-Plus.

sorry for the double post but i improved my score enough to warrant another post:

Guardians Knight - 29,527,175 - Ixion Slave - Level 30

just a couple of points i'd like to discuss with you guys here:

fairies - should you shoot em or collect em for the most points?

what is it that determines what simulation level it puts you on, sometimes ive skipped past level 10 and 30 and other times i've gone right through, is it soley based on score or tech points from the previous level?

did you know you can carry your medals onto the next level, i just discovered that tonight, they come back with you onto the next level to continue to grow which makes for a much quicker achievement of gold medal mode.

In most cases, it's best to collect them, preferably in the middle/end of a chain. You can get 900k for each one if you get them at the end of a 9x chain. Only in some select cases is it necessary to kill a Fairy, to extend a potentially huge chain sequence.
Guardians Knight wrote:what is it that determines what simulation level it puts you on, sometimes ive skipped past level 10 and 30 and other times i've gone right through, is it soley based on score or tech points from the previous level?
Tech points and amount of times died, both in total and on that particular stage. No miss the first four stages to get to Level 45, and your score should be in the 100mil region at that point.

Yeah, they come back if you have one following you at the end of a stage. You should be getting Gold Medal Mode by the end of stage 1 at least, though.

Steady progress on my end, made it to Phase 2 with a good score, but sucked heavily on all earlier stages. Need to work on consistent methods for both scoring and survival. 100mil+ is in sight, and I'm going to knock Alluro off the top soon ^_- (I hope).

The only fairies I know of on that level are hidden in the large tanks. If you shoot down their middle turret, but let them live for a few seconds, a fairy will pop out.

Though, I find it far easier to just bomb them and get a nice quick shot + destroyed at same time bonus.

Fairies will pop out of tanks of those types, no matter what stage you are on. Whether or not you should release them is dependant on the kind of chain you are making (and lets face it, killing a few fairies from Level 45 and beyond is great for extending a 9x).
