Easter eggs in shmups?

Post by Super Laydock »

Well anything worth knowing?

I am talking stuff like hidden messages, hidden games, images, you name it.

It's not like there are any more appropriate weekends to ask this question.... :P

not sure if this is what you are asking but:

Cyvern: performance in a level (collecting all medals) can lead to "advanced" bosses. different color scheme, more complex patterns. in general : harder.

Triggerheart Excelica: performance (medal collection value) unlocks new forms of stage boss, that you would not see without meeting the criteria. also, unlock cyvern, this opportunity is open on most bosses. not played the full game myself, so i cannot confirm beyond that.

also, in the famous doujin Genocide Circuit 2. depending on how well you handle the level, you unlock progressively more depraved hentai to display in the background (also, score gems raise in value ^_^).

stuff like this laydock, i've got more. :D
I have no sig whatsoever.

Are you just talking about hidden stuff like the forest flamingos in Garrega, or does it actually have to have some sort of special meaning?

Does Star Fox count? There's this secret level where the boss is a slot machine.

Armed Police Batrider and its many vicious hidden bosses.

Gundemonium Re: Collection and its 20 or so Play Orders.

And of course, Raizing and its cameo codes.

All I can remember from the top of my head.

Here are some I know about:

*Shooting some statues in Zanac NES multiple times either gives a screen clearing power up or power up boost

*The TGL code in Guardian Legend to play only the shmup stages

*Hidden towers in Xevious

*Hidden hard mode in Twinbee Da! GB b/w that takes effect after you beat the game.

*Hidden special mode in Genesis/MD port of Darius II (Sagaia) that is accessed by pressing C 12 times at the title screen.

*Hidden bonus areas in NES and MSX Gradius

*Hidden stage in SMS R-Type

*Hidden ending pics in JP Super Aleste SFC that appear by pressing L or R

*Hidden "arcade" mode in SNES Gradius III that is accessed by highlighting the game level on the options screen and rapidly pressing A

*Hidden stage 0 in the original Aleste/Power Strike for SMS and MSX? that appears if you continue after beating the game.

Edited post with info on how to do the codes

R-Type Final: The huge ship library has tons of references. I hate to pass someone off to Wikipedia, but here you go.

Gradius III: The final boss attacks! Sort of; the glowey junk Bacterion spits out will teleport you to the first stage of Salamander or the original Gradius.

Aero Fighters 3: Using codes, you can fly as the Lamborghini Diablo from Turbo Force or the rabbit from Rabio Lepus.

Wait, what special mode? I own the game and know of no special mode. :O

Is it a special difficulty level, like opening very hard up?

Edit: Never mind, it's a mode I like, play all the levels in order. :D

I can't think of any easter eggs in shmups, but there are kindof shmups as easter eggs in a few games:

JoJo's Bizzare Adventure PSX: shmup stage
[one of the Mystical Ninja games]: Konami shmup level
Rise of the Robots: had Tiny Phalanx or some shmup hidden...

Wrong crappy robot-smasher, that was Zero Divide ;)
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

On the topic of eatser eggs, what series of driving games had classic little games beneath the loading screen? I'm sure one version featured an early shmup... Hazy memories

I always thought "easter eggs" meant cheats. There are many, many shmups that had cheats like invincibility, extra lives, etc.

I understood easter eggs to just hidden little things - a pointless room in an adveture game with some joke, an silly extra on a DVD accesible through some hidden menu screen, a tiny game hidden behind something else...

Most of you don't seem to know what "easter eggs" are...its not about cheats and/or secrets/hidden bonusses.

The only real easter egg i can think of is in Batsugun, last boss fight. The boss shoots some huge missiles where "Dogyuun" is written on. Quite cool eh?
Oh and if you bomb the trees in Pink Sweets Stage 1 you get the infamous flamingoes flying out. You don't get any points for that at all.

So Plasmo - what defines an easter egg? A substancesless extra? That's what I was getting at, and I'm sure the first ever one was an extra room in a very old adventure game - maybe even a text adventure. I guess I was a little off with my suggestion of a hidden minigame, but they certainly call hidden DVD extras Easter Eggs in the industry...

How about a shmup easter egg: the Gradius bonus in Blades of Steel. I always thought that was a pretty sweet little extra.

That page is a bit off. Adventure was the first easter egg in a video game to get found, true...but there were a few Channel F that had come out years prior that had easter eggs in them. Like Adventure, it showed the programmer's name.

And someone thought it was a text adventure? Geez, I feel old.

Trizeal has a whole easter egg section in the space stage, where you go through row after row of enemy ships lined up like Space Invaders. Destroy them all, and a bonus saucer will fly by for points

Shmup easter eggs...I was thinking of the ten hidden tracks in Thunder Force 4's sound test. I can't really recall any others.

BrianC's probably talking about the individual ending pics for each difficulty.
Could those really be considered easter eggs, though?

Another one: During the first Stage of Shikigami No Shiro 3 you can spot the triangle service cat(?) somewhere.

I feel they count since you have to press a button to get them and they don't appear normally. The code is listed at gamefaqs now too.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/snes/code/588676.html
[one of the Mystical Ninja games]: Konami shmup level
There are a couple Goemon/Mystical Ninja games with Konami shmup references. Goemon 1 SNES/Mystical Ninja has the first level of Gradius, Goemon 2 SNES has the second level of Xexex, Goemon 4 SNES has an unlockable version of Time Pilot, and Goemon DS has a Quarth mini game with Big Core as a boss and the first level of Space Manbow with the GBA Goemon 1 and 2 in the cart slot.
