I like shmups with great dynamics and NONSTOP, close range action. I'm probably one of the few who doesn't like games made for Tate.
It is powerup of laser.

Easy to learn and intuitive scoring systems that are hard to master but allow a lot of improvisation. I also like games that reward you for playing agressively. Also: Creative bullet patterns, not just spam rolling down the screen. To sum it up, pretty much everything I expect to be included in Ketsui DS (or regular Ketsui of course, but I am too poor to afford either the PCB or a console that demands buying a new, expensive TV just for that).

Hori view, with a strange belnd of both Raizing and Psikyo style/gimmicks, and something weird. Some sort of "theme" that everyone seems to dislike and is a strange presence among shooters.

Huge bosses and mid bosses too.
Awesome music

shoe : you forgot viper phase 1 in your list
BASICALLY PROGRESS IS BASED ON AMOUNT OF TIME PUT IN LOLLLL
NOT SOMETHING YOU CAN 1CC IN 10 MINUTES
I like something that takes a while to 1cc. But where progress is NOT solely based on the time you put in (dumb memorizers).

I like when a shmup gives the feeling that you may have "skills" or that makes you adapt to different situations. And as someone said, a scoring system that leaves some room for experimentation.

like :
Shmups with Rank
medal chainning systems
Seibu shmups
Konami shmups
Trigger heart
Mars Matrix bullet reflecting
Millipede/Centipede
etc...

Fire Shark, definitely; lots of rounded edges and let's not forget the little guns that constantly turtle. V-5 has some of the same stuff going on - check out the first popcorn enemies, the horseshoe crab-like ground tanks, or the snake heads that come out of the ground :)

CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL! MAY THE PENGUINS FROM PARODIUS TORMENT YOU FOREVER!

Anyways, the perfect shmup is a parody shmup.

I like shooting through fruitcakes, penguins, giant las vegas dancing girls, caricatures and spoofs of strange Japanese sub-cultures, and pinball machines that look really similar to that annoying boss ship from Gradius, because I have a warped sense of humor.

In fact, the more comedically bizzarre it is, the better.

As far as the actual gameplay goes, I agree mostly with what Robotron said, even though I do like some bullet-hell shmups, like Dangun Feveron and Batsugun.

Cave gets it right, you seem horrifically overpowered and then there's all this stuff coming at you and you gotta weave your big ass in there

Don Pachi's probably perfect
