The game started out with you as a small space fighter and your on the bottom of the screen you have free range over the whole screen to fly to avoid objects and attacks.
The way you played was from the bottom scrolling down like you were flying across the ground from the North to South.
You would encounter space fighters, missle pods in the ground and the likes that you had to destroy.
You could pick up sheild packs and energy packs for more power or bombs.
The big thing I remember is what you could do was blast these Home base bunkers that would launch a ship for you to combine with. This would go on and you could add a few more ships to combine to make a more powerful fighter with a huge array of weapons. The ultimate combination was when the ship would turn into a firebird of sorts for a few min and you were invincible.
One of the main bad guy boss types was a walking platform type of thing that you had to blast its legs and gun pods to destroy it.
it was out around the late 80's early 90's

Re: Need help identifying a SHMUP.
That seems to suggest you played flying towards the bottom of the screen? Has that ever happened in an auto-scroller?like you were flying across the ground from the North to South.

Perhaps he was doing some Kama Sutra on a cocktail cabinet?

I need to identify a game as well, so I'll just ask here to avoid opening another thread.
-I think it would be considered a run-n-gun...it's a vertical one, and you control this little girl (or guy, dunno)
-Setting is medieval Japan, I think
-The main shot was some white balls of sorts, and the other button made the character wave a fan in front of him/her, and that would repel any bullets that got caught in it.
-It was an arcade game.
Any ideas?

Probably Guwange. I didn't play that one much, so i don't remember any fan, but the rest sounds like it.Ruldra wrote:I need to identify a game as well, so I'll just ask here to avoid opening another thread.

No it isn't Guwange. It DOES look like Kiki Kaikai, but something is not right. This vid is very different from what I have in mind, even if the concept is the same.
Maybe there's a similar game around?
EDIT: Never mind. Lurked around some more, and yes it IS Kiki Kaikai. I just thought it had better graphics.

The arcade version probably has slightly better visuals. The Super Famicom sequels do, maybe you have them in mind.

There's Abadox, but this most certainly isn't it. I'd guess it is indeed Terra Cresta like JoshF said.spadgy wrote:That seems to suggest you played flying towards the bottom of the screen? Has that ever happened in an auto-scroller?like you were flying across the ground from the North to South.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

I started a thread asking about games that scroll right-to-left and up-to-down a while ago.Ghegs wrote:There's Abadox, but this most certainly isn't it. Additionaly, MAME lets you flip & rotate any game, so you could play Progear as a tate'd downward-scrolling vert if your little heart desires.

While there's one of these floating around the top page:
Arcade hori that I played probably mid-90's. I remember it as a Gradius rip-off, but don't think it was an actual Gradius (or Salamander, and certainly not Parodius) - though considering how many names they go by, I suppose it might've been without me realizing. I want to say it had a Gradius power-up bar, but that could be wrong, since I'm not sure anyone but Konami has ever thought it was such a great idea. I'm sure I remember being able to hold invulnerability in 'ready' state to trigger when the old one ran out, though, so it can't have been far off. It had a stage late-ish that's all a big ship, R-Type stage three style. There was an extra life that'd spawn if you'd crashed into the scenery, which you could force out without dying (for better end game lives bonus) by ploughing into said big ship with invulnerability on. Er...that's all I've got.

Could it have been R-Shark PCB from South Korean developer Dooyong?Ed Oscuro wrote:I have half a mind to ask about some 97-ish fighter game I saw on demo in a pizza place once, too bad I can't even remember if it's vert or hori. Just remember this: in space, dark colors (definitely not Viper Phase 1)
Anybody want a stab at it?

My suggestion to you all is download the optional mame zipped jpg packs to your hard drive and get a nice image viewer. The mame community has collected images of cabinets, screens, and promotional art that will spark your memory faster than any text description.

Heh, time to keep playing random games. I don't expect anybody to be able to help out with that one.
