Games that scroll in the opposite direction
I was just playing Abadox. I'd heard about the shifting perspective so I wasn't surprised when things went vertical, but what did catch me off guard was that it scrolled (*gasp*) downward. Are there any other fixed scrollers that scroll from right-to-left or top-to-bottom? The only game I've played with something like that is the reverse section of R-Type III's stage 4.

how about "games in which the ship does not face/shoot to the right or up, and where the stage scrolls in the direction that the ship faces." So, for example, the ship shoots to the left and the stage scrolls right-to-left, or the ship shoots down and the stage scrolls down. Gradius V doesn't have this, R-Type III does not have this, etc. I'd be interested in a game like this, just so it can mess with my preconceptions.

Both Espgaluda II and Mushihime-sama Futari have sections where the screen scrolls from right to left, as well as parts where the screen scrolls downward. Mushihime-sama has right to left scrolling in parts of Stage 3 as well.tada wrote:Recca scrolls downward at one point.
I believe Espgaluda II does too.

Fantasy zone series! They both scroll in left and right... only forced right at bosses (Btw Fantasy Zone for Arcade/ps2 and super fantasy zone for genesis are best... ignore lame fantasy zone 2)

Many of Cave games have at least some type of non-traditional scrolling:
Progear (stage 4...scrolls up the entire stage)
Guwange ( all stages scroll up,sideways, and diagonal )
Galuda II (stages 2 & 6 diagonal in part)(stage diagonal and backwards in parts)
Ketsui (Stage 5 scrolls backwards in one part)
The new Mamoru-kun game will also have some diagonal scrolling.

Androgynus does indeed scrolls down but your hero is always pointing to either left or right. It's an hybrid of a vertical and horizontal shmup. (Maybe that's why it's called Androgynus?) .
Interesting game, though I little too boring. I will always remember it as the game that made a gathering of people disperse very quickly in an MSX fair (Lots of people were around a Turbo-R while it was playing Space Manbow. At some point the guy decided to change it to Androgynous and one second later no one else was looking at the Turbo-R anymore, heh

except those stages are piss easy. Just stay on the right corner and keep shooting. Not one single enemy will escape.Rob wrote:Sega Genesis Shadow Dancer bonus stages.kengou wrote:the ship shoots to the left and the stage scrolls right-to-left, or the ship shoots down and the stage scrolls down. Can't see the point of a bonus stage if it's so retardly easy.,

And the sequels (Side Arms, Forgotten Worlds). Also surprised it took so long for these to come up.boagman wrote:Huh. Surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet: Capcom's Section Z.

yeah but the action is always concentrated towards the right in the thunderforce games (unless you count the freeroaming in TF2).Kaiser wrote:Thunderforce III AND AC have some moments of forced scrolling to down or left (Battleship stage) and in both on orn base sometimes action scrolls down then up etc.sven666 wrote:are there any games where the action is concentrated to the left or downwards tho?

i was more wondering if theres a shmup where your ship faces left or downwards all the time (regardless of scrolling) ??
