R-Type PCB...did I pay too much?
I just picked up a Nintendo R-Type PCB tested and working from a guy online for $40 + shipping. It's got the JAMMA sound mod on it so the sound works properly. Is that a reasonable price? It seemed ok to me but I never see the game for sale, so I figured what the heck.

Yeah, is a full board... big ol' honking huge thing too. I have a dedicated R-type cab (though it spends most of its time running mars matrix ^^). $40 for the PCB is an excellent deal, especially with the sound fix.
Incidentally, R-Type is a fully JAMMA compliant board, excepting for the sound. I didn't have to modify the wiring at all in my R-Type cab to run CPS-2 (Mars Matrix) - video and controls are fine, just no sound (so I hooked up a set of stereo speakers. Who wants mono anyway?).
But yeah... great deal on a classic shmup

R-Type is JAMMA compliant, if you had to change the sound you don't have a JAMMA compliant cabinet.Aleanil wrote:Incidentally, R-Type is a fully JAMMA compliant board, excepting for the sound. For some reason, certain boards go for a lot in Japan. For example Final Fight might go for $150 over there, where as they can be had on ebay in the $50-60 range. Go figure.professor ganson wrote:This thread is just confusing. Is this an original R-Type PCB or not? The real thing is quite pricey, going by Fujita. I've been thinking about saving up for one myself.

Actually, R-Type does have problems outputting sound to a regular JAMMA cabinet. This page gives you the steps to convert it to work. As my cab is an original Nintendo dedicated R-Type cabinet, my R-Type works fine in it (though Mars Matrix and other JAMMA boards have no sound, thus my set of speakers that live on top of my cab). Perhaps this only applies to the US version of the PCB or something, but I know it holds true for me.rtw wrote: R-Type is JAMMA compliant, if you had to change the sound you don't have a JAMMA compliant cabinet.

Interesting, I have the JP PCB and it plugs straight into my JAMMA loom with sound and everything. Do you have a picture of your PCB ?Aleanil wrote:Actually, R-Type does have problems outputting sound to a regular JAMMA cabinet. This page gives you the steps to convert it to work. Those capacitor changes, did you have to do them on the PCB itself or in the cab ?

Those capacitor changes are for the board itself. I'm afraid I didn't get any pics of my PCB during my disassembly and cleaning of my R-Type cab, I only took outer photos - and now the cab is kinda in a place where I can't easily open it up to take pics.
That's really interesting that your JP version works fine in a JAMMA cab w/o the modification. Wish I had another cab to test my unmodified (at least, I'm pretty sure it's unmodified... I got the cab from a fairly clueless guy, but *some* previous owner had been pretty savvy as they had replaced one of the fire buttons on the CP with a Sanwa button instead of the original leaf style) PCB in and see if the sound would work or not. Based on what I had read before, that capacitor modification was required for all R-Type boards, but that's obviously not true.

Nice find! I guess I'll be patient and see if I can do better than the price at Fujita.maxlords wrote:Yeah, a legit US release R-Type boardprofessor ganson wrote:This thread is just confusing. Had a look at the schematics. The capacitor mods which have been done:
Looks like they removed the amplification stage from the PCB. May I ask how you adjust the volume on this cabinet ? Is there an external amp ?
Even though the PCB is JAMMA the cabinet is not. It goes through two FCC connection boards. Into two different harnesses labeled 44P FCC & 36P FCC. See page 10 of the manual for details.

Code: Select all
1: Remove the jumper wire from position C108 (+) to C102 (-)
2: Add C101 and C102. Both are 2200 microfarad electrolytic capacitors, rated at 16 WVDC, (DC Working Volts) and radial type.
3: Add C108, 1 microfarad electrolytic capacitor, 50 WVDC, radial leads.Even though the PCB is JAMMA the cabinet is not. It goes through two FCC connection boards. Into two different harnesses labeled 44P FCC & 36P FCC. See page 10 of the manual for details.

Ah, *that* clears things up very nicely! This is my only cabinet, so I thought that the two harnesses coming off of the JAMMA connector was an odd, but not unknown and not non-standard thing.
I actually don't recall how to adjust the volume - I only ran R-Type for about two weeks before I put in Mars Matrix (which required bypassing the sound and using external speakers). I think there may have been a knob up by the speaker inside. I'll take a look when I get home from work.

I keep feeling like killing people when I read about R-Type not being JAMMA. All R-Type boards are JAMMA when they left the factory. I've owned a great deal of them, and a great deal of M-72 games which were conversions or had donor mainboards from R-Types. The motherboards are identical to every other M-72 based game, all of which people are happy to accept as JAMMA, because they are.
If there are any boards out there which are not JAMMA compliant, then it's because somebody modified them, probably Nintendo.
