Pronunciation of shmups

Post by SchruteFarmsBeets »

Is there a site that tells you how to properly say the name of certain shmups? The ones I don't know if I'm saying correctly are:

Ikaruga
Ibara
Mushihimesama (Or is it Mushihime-sama?)
DoDonPachi Dai-Oujou
Espgaluda (Or is it ESP Galuda?)
Esprade/ESP Ra De
Exelica

I think that's all.

Ikaruga: ee-kar-ga (the u is just barely, barely pronounced)
Ibara: ee-bah-rah, just like the evil voice on the title screen says it.
Mushihimesama: moo-shee-hee-may-sah-mah
DDP DOJ: dough-don-patch (the a is like in "father") die-oh-joe
Espgaluda: esp-gah-loo-duh (it's weird to say, I just say Galuda)
ESP Ra.De: I read somewhere that it's pronounced "esp-raid"
Exelica: Excel-i-ka (she says her name when you select her)

This topic is full of FAIL unless you guys stop posting crap and start using IPA fonts. Japanese is probably one of the easiest language phonetic-wise.

As stated in the older thread I'd pronounce the game in a way it seems to be intended to, it's just dumb to pronounce a romanian (or english) looking name like the japanese would do.

If you can pronounce vowels (which most native english speakers can't) it's not too hard to pronounce the japanese titled games after their kana, if not I'd suggest to pronounce them like you'd naturally do without twisting your tongue.

Yeah, I've always assumed that's the pronounciation. Like Ibara, DP and DDP it's heard at the title screen.

What about Dimahoo? I've been saying it as "Dee-Ma-Hoo."

It's easier just to say Great Mahou Daisakusen.

It's "Die-Ma-Hoo".

Dimahoo is a rearranging of the Japanese title Great Mahou Daisakusen.

Most of the time, I don't care and pronounce titles with an awful french accent, without the efforts I'd usually put in speaking English words decently :P
And it kind of makes sense when talking to other French people : if I spelled titles with a perfect English or Japanese accent (depending on the game), they'd probably have more difficulty to figure out exactly how it spells. Bad excuse I know.

Sounds more like with an 'a' like "shack". Consult the opening of the original DP and DDP for more.
CIT wrote:It's easier just to say Great Mahou Daisakusen.
Indeed, but it doesn't seem to be pronounced that way. I swear on it. Unless I've got horrible ears (and I hope not), it's "Great Mahoo Dah-Sak-Sen." (It may be Dai-Sak-Sen) But I barely hear that "k"! It's even in the US version, if you open the sound test menu. Look in the back about 30 (?)places before the music starts. Well, when you hear LOUD ASS EXPLOSIONS, you're getting there.
------
What the hell, I thought I could say something about "it's just a title" and I find something funny. Okay.

Also SpooN is correct, massively. I'll bet Japanese is probably not nearly as hard as people say.

I saw a friend playing something in MAME once. I asked him what it was, and he said "Esprade".

Upon hearing this, my thought was "S. Parade? WTF? Where are the elephants and marching band? LAME."

A few months later I was playing it every day at the arcade. Mostly out of depression after a nasty breakup but that's not the point. I guess this entire post went off-topic.

They even say it on the title screen like that, so it´s not a big mystery.

Maybe they say "DIE!-MA-HOE" in the more dodgier parts.

Most of my friends refer to shmups as 'those flying shooting games with all the bullets and shit', so I've never really felt the need for proper pronunciation. Maybe some of you guys could make a recording of yourselves pronouncing the names, since you have no idea how to convey it in writing...

I always assumed ESP was an acronymn, and instead of saying "Esp-gah-loo-dah" like everyone else seems to, I say "Ee-es-pee gah-loo-dah."

And yeah, Japanese is very phoenetic and easy. Once you know all the vowel sounds their vowels make "a = ah, i = ee, u = oo, o = oh, e = eh," it becomes a lot easier =) They don't have long/short vowels or whatever like we do. None of this A = Ay or Ah nonsense.

Ay Ee Eye Oh You. If you're from Canada, it's Eh for the first one. If you're Scottish, it's Aye for the third one.

Is somebody dropping vowels ala Tokyo dialect where they shouldn't?

Well, there is the possibility of long (double) vowels which are just the same sound but longer :B

Like the OU and jOU in DDP DOJ (O is stretched with an U and E with an I (as in sensei))

asian languages use these sounds

ei- long a
e- short e i believe (schwa in Chinese)
i- long e
ai- long i
a- short o
ou- long o
u- double o

missing sounds
short a/i/u
long u

if you see an o it will always be long o
technically there's no o in Chinese, not sure if this applies to Japanese as well

I found this video on youtube of someone saying the names of their favorite "shumps". It sounds like a digitized voice...?

Actually they do, and next to the double-consonant, they are the most mistaken part of the language to a beginner.
if you see an o it will always be long o
Explain please.

I think they were referring to long/short sounded vowels in English (to for short o, tow for long o) instead of like お and おう. I wonder how long before someone introduces IPA symbols to this thread for the full experience.

I found this video to be deeply disturbing. It really, really made me feel odd.
