Ether Vapor
Ether Vapor
Well, since nobody's yet complained about me hosting the Alltynex 2nd trial, I'll do another one from C72. The demo at the game's official website is an older version, this version adds a new level.

Looks really good, though it appears the explosion noise was aped straight from Raiden II.
I like the whole Einhander-type perspective; a horzi with varying perspectives, though that one section of the battleship uses a Raystorm-like view, which I think is cool. It's like what Philosoma should have been, perspective-wise.

I'd like to see the DC indie scene put this kind of effort in, instead of 90% of the time turning out crap barely worth paying attention to. Weapon balance feels off somehow but the presentation is astounding.
Not to mention, the lock-on sections make Triangle Service's Project Lambda look feasible for standard arcade controls.
Nice of them to include the soundtrack on the disc.

Looks good except for all the stringy particles and bullets.

It is very good. One of my favourite doujins EVAR. I so want to buy the full version, but Palet Web has sold out already and Himeya's shipping fees are stupid.FRO wrote:Review makes it look pretty good...
And just that there's no confusion, I've long since deleted the C72 demo I was hosting - the official site has a newer demo available now.

You guys are debating when did they go wrong threads, and one of the best shmups to come in a long time is out, and to boot its free. This game should be top priority. I liked the demo, and this game just went througha massive overhaul in every department. If this was a DC or a PS2 release it would be the rave ATM. With more quality independent games like this i might let my console's collect dust. This is top notch!

What did I just say?Dale wrote:I think theirs a problem with the download link.
Also I deleted some of the links here as the game is NOT free as far as I can tell. You can download the trial at the official website or you can buy the full game from HimeyaShop (or Palet Web if they ever get it back in stock).Ghegs wrote:And just that there's no confusion, I've long since deleted the C72 demo I was hosting - the official site has a newer demo available now.

That's odd, both the website link and the download link there work just fine for me.Dale wrote:The official website link wouldn't work ether, but whatever.

Just tried it. Here are some first impressions:
Level design and enemy movement seems well thought out, bosses have wide range of often surprising attacks. Some memorization required
Perspective changes aren't as confusing as i expected, but it's sometimes hard to see what's going on through all those explosions, debris and missile trails. Fact that some enemies can attack from different layers also adds to confusion. Luckily, it's possible to turn on visible hitboxes (well, hit-spheres) on just about everything.
You have wide range of weapons, none of them is overpowered, and each has it's use. You have forward firing machinegun, charge beam, spread fire (with adjustable spread), reflect barrier, and lock-on missiles (with automatic or manual targeting).
Controls are responsive, but button combinations for various attacks are confusing at first.
There's interesting scoring system that gives you points for pumping more bullets into already destroyed enemies. I don't completely understand how it works, but i like the idea. Continues are initially limited to 3 but you can earn more (i don't know how it works, probably something with reaching certain stages). You seem to get extra lives on beginning of each stage. Only problem is that score doesn't reset when continuing.
Game as a whole just KICKS ASS. Go play it now, you won't regret it
EDIT: I was wrong about extra lives. They're based on score.

Movement seems OK to me, collisions probably feel weird due to perspective. As i said, some attacks come from different layers and it's hard to tell how far they are so sometimes bullets seem to pass right through player because they're closer to camera etc.sfried wrote:Did they fix the iffy hitboxes and movement?worstplayer wrote:Just tried it. But this is problem with pretty much all 3D games.
"A game isn't bad because you resent it. A game is bad because it's shitty."
Like most games with this 2d in 3d approach there is no connection between the foreground and the background, making the game feel very empty and flat, especially during the vertical segments. I thought the days when people where duped by "rotating cubes with lightning effects on them" where long gone.
The presentation is nice though and the gameplay is solidly run of the mill.

Well, i just tried it on my old computer (which is 800mhz Athlon with SDRAM and some prehistoric ATI video card) and it runs on 60fps there (with high details and enabled framebuffer).Octopod wrote:worstplayer wrote: Try turning off frame buffer
Tried this, turn graphics to low and turned on the fps counter.I seem to be hovering between 15-30 fps unless nothing but my ship is on the screen then it goes to 42.
You either have broken drivers or ultra-crappy onboard VGA.
