I know this thread is ancient, but

1: Who's place is that w/ all the cabs? Nice!
2: A girl... wow
3: Where the fuck did "Munich" come from when Germans write (and pronounce?) it so differently. Where did the word "Germany" come from anyway.

I was in Munchen a couple of weeks ago. Stayed as usual in the Kraft Hotel at the bottom of Schiller Strasse. There was a game shop not far up the road and a lot of stripper bars  .
Held announced the meet in advance over at Namakoteam HQ. Impressive lineup of games  !

Munich - has something to do with monks as it started as a monastery back in the day, iirc. Germany - not sure where that comes from, but all the names are basically tribes that used to hang out here. Teutons -> Deutsch, Allemanns -> Allemagne, etc. For places in Europe it's not uncommon to have really different sounding names in different languages. e.g. Ljubljana = Laibach, Milano = Mailand, Munich = Monaco di Bavieri (in Italian), etc.

I would have, except that I had no spare time as it was a business trip and a short one at that. I managed to fit in the Ratskeller, a Haxnbauer and the Deeba Indian for food and drink but that was about it for my free time :o .

Where does "Germany" come from is more like "why do they called Deutschland and we call it Germany". I know the same can be said for loads of countries. I always found it weird. Japan, for instance.

Germany propably comes from "Germania" but telling all about it in english is too difficult for me.
The Expression "Deutschland" appeared later then when many small states bound themselves together to "Deutsches Reich", which is now called Deutschland.

Thats almost everything i know about german history, I refused to learn any other stuff :?

i imagine most germanic names are kinda hard to pronounce for non-native speakers aswell, thats proboably why they change em to the native tounge.

munic is called munchen in swedish for instance..

and Deutchland is called Tyskland..

id love to hear some japanese guy try to pronounce "Deutches reich" tho

Japan and "nihon/nippon" have the same source, historically. English "Japan" just got passed through Chinese, into Malay, then into Portuguese, and finally into English. By that time the pronunciation had changed a bit through each transfer, giving the distinctly different form we find today.

OMG this can be very complicated.... here f.e. is the explanation for Oesterreich/austria (i could not find one for deutschland)

The German name Österreich can be translated into English as the "eastern realm", which is derived from Old German Ostarrîchi. The name was Latinized as "Austria", although it has no etymological connection with the name of Australia (which derives from Latin Australis meaning The South). Reich can also mean "empire," and this connotation is the one that is understood in the context of the Austrian/Austro-Hungarian Empire, Holy Roman Empire, although not in the context of the modern Republic of Österreich. The term probably originates in a vernacular translation of the Medieval Latin name for the region: Marchia orientalis, which translates as "eastern marches" or "eastern borderland", as it was situated at the eastern edge of the Holy Roman Empire, that was also mirrored in the name Ostmark, for a short period applied after the Anschluss to Germany. However, Friedrich Heer, one the most important Austrian historians in the 20th century, stated in his book Der Kampf um die österreichische Identität (The Austrian Identity), that the Germanic form ostarrîchi was not a translation of the Latin word, but both resulted from a much older term originating in the Celtic languages of antique Austria: More than 2,500 years ago, the major part of the actual country was called Norig by the Celtic population (Hallstatt culture); No- or Nor- would mean east or eastern, whereas Rig is the ancient form of modern German Reich, thus realm or empire. Accordingly, Norig would essentially mean ostarrîchi and Österreich, thus Austria. The Celtic name was eventually Latinized to noricum, when the Romans conquered and romanized the country that later became Austria. The name of noricum was then used to designate the Roman province.[citation needed]

The current official designation is the Republic of Austria (Republik Österreich).[7] It was originally known after the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1918 as the Republic of German Austria (Republik Deutschösterreich) , but the state was forced to change its name to "Republic of Austria" in 1919 by the Treaty of Saint-Germain. The name was changed again during the Austro-fascist regime (1934 -1938) , into Federal State of Austria (Bundesstaat Österreich) , but restored after regaining independence and the birth of the Second Austrian Republic (1955 -present).

During the period of monarchy, Austria was known as the Austrian Empire (Kaisertum Österreich) ; however no official designation existed since the empire was strongly multiethnic. After the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, the empire became known as Austria-Hungary reflecting the dual monarchy character.

CRAP! I wish I had known about that place when I had gone to Munich back in March of '07. I had posted a thread on SRK asking about arcades in Munich, Prague, and Salzburg, but of course those dumbshits don't know anything. The closest thing to an arcade that I saw was this casino near the Hauptbahnhof that had a few games, like Outrun 2 and Tekken. Is there a good number of arcades in munich? Maybe I was just looking in the wrong part of town.

I remember doing a project for Japanese class and something similar occurred with the word "en" (the national currency of Japan). The portugese romanized it to "wen" and somehow, it changed to "yen" over time.
