Us common folks haven't played them in MAME yet.EOJ wrote:This would be a good poll if it was still 2004.
The list is missing the unique scoring systems in Futari 1.0, 1.5, & Black Label (2 core systems w/ 9 variants), Ibara BL, MMP, and DeathSmiles. Lumping all of those into "something else" is a bit of an oversimplification. Also, where does Galuda 2 fit in?

I play exclusively for score. However, i can see how my post might come across as the FYP. There is a difference between "not playing for score" and not liking a scoring system but still playing the game. I don't maximize scoring systems that i don't enjoy. Let's say i'm playing DDP, i'm scoring as best as i possibly can, but without constantly memorizing a stage route, which i find extremely tedious and takes all the fun out of a game. So i'm always maximizing score but could never approach DDP's theoretical limit.

I'm curious which Cave scoring systems are the favorites. A Yagawa scoring system is a copout answer, but feel free to post it.Dave_K. wrote: So what about Ibara, Pink Sweets, and MMP? Anyway, since this is a busted poll, I vote Ketsui.

DOJ: I want to believe!
Voted Dangun because in all honesty I'm normally too fecking tired and cannot be arsed to memorise the chaining needed for scores in the pachi series. I treat Donpachi as totally separate from its sequels though, since you can effectively ignore the chaining without feeling like you're playing it wrong.
I play for around 2-3 hours every third day - I really wouldn't want those precious hours taken up by restarts on ST1 DOJ. One day perhaps, but not now. Also, now I kind of understand it, I actually quite like Mushi Maniac's score system.
Anyone get the impression Rob's indirectly gunning for Daifukkatsu here?

From what I've played, that's mostly a DonPachi thing. I find it enjoyable, but only because I don't try to full-chain the stages which would be tedious. It's still fun to hold back a bit and try to mow down enemies in rapid succession and see how far I can go. I once chained up through the mid-boss on stage 1 of DDP DOJ, but lost it before the next wave of enemies came. I was thrilled, but have failed to repeat that feat. I personally wish item collection, bomb management, and no-miss bonuses were increased and chaining was de-emphasized a bit. At least for scoring purposes. The game is a blast to play regardless. I just don't want to perfect my chaining, and that's the only to score really well.MathU wrote:Which ones don't have enemy chaining? That sucks.
ESPGaluda earned my vote. You can earn bursts of points here and there, as you choose, without having to maintain any sort of chain. Plenty of freedom, and you can make mistakes and still score well. Read up on it in the strategy forum.
ESP Ra.De also had an interesting scoring system that allowed room for mistakes, but it didn't have the dynamic feel that ESPGaluda's had.
I also played Mushihime sama, but I only got it three days ago, so I don't really know what's going on there yet. I hear it has different scoring systems based on what mode you are in. Some of which apparently involve some sort of chaining. *shrug* I mostly seemed to earn points from item collection. Getting hit makes you lose all collected items, so you want to no-miss a stage to score well. Item bonus + no-miss bonus = win!
I haven't played any of the other Cave games yet, so I cannot comment. I've gotten the impression that chaining is not the main scoring mechanic in most of their games, however.

Donpachi series, or more precisely Dodonpachi.
That's THE chain system. An I hope the best has yet to come with this Daifukkatsu. And I also hope I'll be able to play it on a home console.
I was very interested in Mushihimesama maniac mode, but I've never managed to get things work properly: even runs with the exactly same movements, shots, killings, ended up with different scores. Not a fault of the score system, obviously.

Ra.De. base system is my favorite. It's almost like the shooting game equivalent to a fighting game combo system. Weakening an enemy a bit then using a stronger attack and combining it with a weaker attack to maximize the multiplier. After that, Galuda and the Department of Justice.
Feedback will set you free.

There's still a lot of people who never post on the hi score forum that gush over it thoughiatneH wrote:Hah, and I wonder how many people on the Ketsui hiscore table actually played the game.
The game has been around a while and used to be relatively cheap, so quite a few people have played it.
(then again there's a lot of players who only post in the hi score forum and never bother with any other forums but i love those people

You mean like this (though about DOJ, not Ketsui)?Twiddle wrote:There's still a lot of people who never post on the hi score forum that gush over it though
This was excellent.I think the series was done after DOJ. How can you improve it? I've never played DOJ, but from a lot of people Cave improved the gameplay more than DoDonPachi.

Like many of us I love the simplicity of DDP and the playstyle it encourages, but I'm really loving gradually getting an understanding of Progear's scoring, so my vote goes there.
Outside of shmups, the best scoring system ever has to be Rainbow Islands, with the whole 'seven invisible screen zones' thing, and the selective fruit picking.
