There are vertical shmups that are native-widscreen.moozooh wrote:Widescreen in a vertical shmup? It looks much worse than Soeldner-X, at least in that one widescreen was perfectly justified.

Judging by the fact that I've never once heard about one before, I take it they aren't really popular, either. I wonder why. (I don't.)dave4shmups wrote:There are vertical shmups that are native-widscreen.

It's a fairly interesting project for some NeoGAF users working on XNA PC/Xbox 360

I agree with most here, looks terrible. Notice the "shield" bar at the bottom, the widescreen, the enemies that take a lot of hits to kill, the lack of interesting bullet patterns... and very possibly the analog-stick aiming, as I noticed the ship shooting sideways with the aim of the shot circling around as if controlled by a stick. I really hope that Omega 5 (and before it, Geometry Wars) has not started a trend of analog-stick aiming for scrolling shmups, because it's just stupid.

Look! It's a textured cube! OMG it's got these cool lightning effects! Next-gen!
Man 1 : Right. We need a project to try out some new ideas. Any suggestions?
Man 2 : Remember those shooters we used to play back in the eighties?
Man 1 : Like 1942 and stuff? Those where the days! Spending all your hours at the arcade playing all these games. Sure, I remember.
Man 2 : What if we made an updated version of that kind of game, with lighning effects and rotating guns and all. It could even be controlled using the analog stick! Wouldn't that be neat?
Man 1 : Cool! Let's do it.
Man 2 : And if the game plays badly, who cares?. No one is going to play 2d games on a pc anyway, right?
Man 1 : (chuckles) Right.

I know what's more stupid.....not started a trend of analog-stick aiming for scrolling shmups, because it's just stupid.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Compile, for one-all of their vertical shmups were native full-screen, and most are considered pretty good.moozooh wrote:Judging by the fact that I've never once heard about one before, I take it they aren't really popular, either. I'll reserve criticism for this one when it comes out; I love Euro-Shmups, and it's not as if this one is finished yet-it doesn't even have a release date.

Wow, that looked awful. YOKO is bad enough, but this has ultimate wide screen YOKO. It doesn't make any sense at all. The main ship in the cg intro was pretty nice. Good to see they got at least one right.
Ah, it will be on xbox live and everybody will give it 9's and 10's when it's out, who cares!

Nothing against non-tate vertical shmups like RSG or Mars Matrix, but this is just ridiculous. This, and the ultra ULTRA slow bullets.
I somehow like the ships design in the trailer, even though it looks like a syringe with wings. Speaking of which: Why all the cutscenes? It seems proven to me that you really don´t need all this CG and "story" stuff to get gamers interested, just look at Geometry Wars. I bet games like rRootage or Tumiki Fighters would actually sell A LOT better than this here.
I really wonder why developers keep trying their hands on shmups if they clearly have next to zero knowledge about the genre.
