Is Dangun supposed to be this fast?

Post by evil_ash_xero »

I've been recently trying my luck at Dangun Feveron, and find it to be...insanely fast. Like, how are you supposed to play this? Is it this fast in the arcade, or is it some kind of MAME problem?

It's supposed to be fast, that's why you can select ship speed.

Well, I know that. My brain doesn't work that fast. Oh well.

The actual Dangun Feveron PCB is damn fast to begin with -- is on par with the number four speed selection on the classic PCE/TG-16 shmup game of Gunhed/Blazing Lazers... ^_~

Feveron is regarded as Cave's fastest arcade shmup title in terms of sheer speed player-wise (and still no official game console port to this day, either). Either play it on Mame emulation or grab the PCB version and play it as it was meant to be played on low-res 15.7kHz RGB monitor with Supergun or full-sized Japanese arcade cabinet setup..... ^_~

No, it's not supposed to be that fast. Mame is actually faster than the PCB. It was significant enough to throw me off when I finally got a chance to play the original in person last year.

Well, i'm glad someone gave me a decent answer. Thanks. Can you play the game in any other emulators that play it at a speed more like the PCB?

I played the same PCB Damocles did... it seemed just as fast as when I played it in MAME. At least, I was doing about as well as I usually do (losing my disco man count halfway through stage 2 and not surviving much longer after that)

I really want to master this game but it's so intimidating.

The PCB is still plenty fast, though. I haven't done any side-by-side comparisons, but I have played both on different occasions and both were too fast for me.

That´s nothing. My version of MAME displays Battle Garegga with polygons and cat image macros instead of bullets.

On topic: Yeah, Dangun really IS that fast, and if you try playing it seriously you better pick one of the two fastest ship speeds, as scoring high is nearly impossible with the slower speeds. (Not that I am a pro by any means, I still can´t even access the default scoretable :? )

Are you sure that wasn't rank?

Rank drops after you die lol. It affects bullet speed, and I'm pretty sure it has no effect on anything else in feveron. Should max out when you nomiss to stage 3.

I didn't die until stage 3, if I remember correctly. It seemed slower from the get go. Patterns that are normally reflex twitch dodges in Mame are much more...thoughtful...on the PCB. At least that's what I remember thinking while playing...

Meh...just download a vid and compare that with Mame...

Mame still does not emulate wait states.

This causes certain games to play too fast when the cpu settings are correct.

Dangun Feveron is one of them.

It is my experience that scoring well makes rank go up more then simple survival.

I laughed when I saw this thread title because I remember playing Dangun for the first time a couple years ago and thinking the exact same thing to myself.

During the stage 3 boss I remember spending about 5 credits just trying to consistently dodge one of his final patterns but it was so insanely fast that I could hardly even comprehend it.

Most of the final stage is so fast that I sometimes don't even have time to think to press the bomb button because the moment that I realize there is a pattern speeding at me I'm already dead.

Also, would it have killed them to make those tiny bullets more noticeable? As if the sheer hyper-speed doesn't make the game difficult enough, they throw in these tiny bullets that blend in with almost every background in the game.

Dangun Feveron is Cave's best and one of their few titles that keep me coming back!
