Favorite is Contra 4 easily. Takes the game mechanics of Contra 3 and and combined with the more platformer elements of Contra/Super Contra.

3 & 4 are my favorites, but I've never played Hard Corps, Legacy of War, or Neo. I'm currently leaning towards giving the nod to 4 as being the best, but it's so new it's really too early to say.

Hmmm...from best to worst:
1. Hard Corps
2. 3
3. Neo
4. Shattered
5. Contra
6. Super C
7. Arcade Contra

I will say I have very strong feelings for 3, considering it was one of my first games. I beat it on Hard for the first time this year, and for a while I considered it my favorite of them all. I guess I'll never know myself which is my favorite, but for now, let's just say Hard Corps (and man oh man am I glad Konami USA took out the lifebars -- I can't believe some of the idiots who pay over $100 for the Japanese version where they can get the better version here for chickenscratch).

You know, I also have a lot of trouble deciding whether I think Castlevania IV or Bloodlines is my favorite of the bunch as well.

Amen. JP life points (and to a lesser extent, cheats) = WTF? Unless it made up for this in some way, which I'm not aware of it doing.

I don't have a particular favourite (especially since I've not played Contra 4 yet), but I do slightly prefer the run-and-gun focus of the earlier games to the boss rush ethic. If Shattered Soldier had included more free-running action like Mission 3's opening area, and had worked on its handful of lazy patterns (ST2 Bikers = perfect opportunity for the Super C laser shower o' doom to make a return >_<), it'd probably be my favourite overall. I love the weapons system and strafing controls, and the game's destruction feels fiercer than the others to me. It's one hell of a fun game to show off to people, as well (stage 2 boss demise = comedy gold).

Legacy of War. lulz

Actually it isn't as bad as most people make it out to be. C - The Contra Adventure is the real turd of the series.

I'd have to say my favorite is still Hard Corps though. Can't go wrong with HC.

I used to be able to 1CC hard corps perfectly back in the day must have played it non stop for 3 months, loved that game.

Haven't been able to get anywhere near a clear on shattered though, good game though, of that I have no doubt. I'll give it another shot next week.

Hard corps will always be king for me though, 5 endings just rules.

Contra: Hard Corps and Contra: Shattered Soldier are like...the best in the series.
And I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one here that thinks Contra 3 is inferior to Contra: HC and Contra: SS. Contra 3 was good, but the bosses just couldn't compete with its Genesis counterpart. (Plus, there were a lot more bosses, and I'm a total fgt for boss fights.) I came buckets to how badass some of the boss fights in Contra: HC were.

EDIT-I forgot I already made a previous post in here. =/

Whatever the case, caterpillar boss on CSS for the fucking win

For me, it's like a toss up between 3 and 4. Problem with 3 is that I don't like the overhead stages at all. And that only leaves 4 stages. They are very well done stages, but still.

4 is so much of a remix/homage that it kind of hurts it in a way, but at the same time, the game freaking rocks. I mean, it's a blast and a half to play. Yeah, it has the behind the back stages, but despite people not liking the polygonal backgrounds, those parts are actually pretty fun, and short. And the game has like 6 other stages.

So, it's a tough call.

I finally picked up a copy of this game a few days ago. Man, it is awesome. It's definitely up there with 3 and HC as one of the best in the series.

WATCH ME PLAY DIS GAEM WITH ONE HAND, MOTHERFUCKER

Well, Operation C...but...

I like the older games in the series, although they are lacking in variety, and some (like Op C) take forever to ramp up the difficulty.

Agree with evil_ash_xero, they more or less fucked up the overhead stages in all of the old Contra games (Super Contra in arcade's bomb didn't make it into any port or Operation C, wtf?). To paraphrase somebody from the Retrogaming Roundtable said, "what's this? Guerilla War in my Contra?"

I don't know how well Neo Contra did top-down, but most of the others feel bland in top-down. I think Contra III did it pretty well and has some interesting ideas (I like how both gameplay modes have the spin shot, for one, although I don't know if I'll find it useful) along with at least a few terrible ones (wtf crouching and also bits of scenery that fall out from under you or spin you around...liek whoa).
Nuke wrote:Oh? And this one doesn't?!
NeoCon's is great too, although in a rather too 2channel way (add in the extra videos for extra whut factor).

But to answer the question - no, I don't remember Contra III's being over two minutes long!* If it is, it's because it's fucking Shakespeare and takes you around the world three times.

Also, the noises at the beginning (defrost sequence I guess) remind me of the alien fight from Metal Slug 3.

* It's just under, including the Konami logo  About 25sec. less than C:SS.

Topdown stages on III are ASS

Post by LaserGun »

As a general rule III = HC = SS since they're all good but HC is my favorite.

I suck at SS so there isn't much there for me to say about it.

I really like Neo Contra too, it has the right level of cheese like the cutscene with ANIMAL CONTRA.

I also kind of forgot I hated multi-directional shooters but love Neo Contra wtf, also I must be the only one here who hates Contra 4 (LOL TINY SCREENS + TWO SCREENS) but that's alright, you can make fun of me for liking Neo Contra so much.

Everything on C4's screens is huge, so it's like one of the arcade games with an ungainly vertical setup. It doesn't feel to me like there's really a lot less space for maneuvering than in an original Game Boy title - even say Castlevania Adventure which has a tiny hero, or Operation C.

Shattered Soldier is one of the rawest, filthiest, most hardcore, testosterone fuelled run n' guns ever.

It's taking fucking names.

I have Contra:SS and despite wanting to love it....I just can't get into it much. To me it feels like the game relys far too much on making the *controls* hard, than it does making the game hard.

I constantly feel like I have to stop and think about the controls, with locking the angle/movement, swapping weapons and then positioning my character in the one or two safe spots on the screen instead of jumping and moving around/through things.

I think the first Contra had it down right...simple controls, fun level design and almost constant movement.

I'm all for more 'depth' in a game, but the controls require such a hefty 'training' period, that it's a chore to learn how to play good enough to really enjoy the game.

So I went back to Contra 4 today to give it a go, I just don't like how plain and pedestrian it feels, feels so rehashy too, ewww. I'm spoiled by the OTT nature of HC, SS and Neo tbh.

ALSO WTF IS THIS SHIT: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=mgEoCG7Q5_U

Only 1 minute 30 seconds into the video I can see so so so so many things that are wrong with that game.

Anyway this thread really makes me want to play Neo Contra now, so I'll do that this week.

Neo Contra cutscenes stages 1 - 4

What things, in particular? I'm not pulling your leg, I'm genuinely interested to hear.

Myself, I didn't like random enemy spawning fucking up timing in the Challenges - that was more an issue of laziness than anything else. Helped me develop better strategies to deal with some levels, though!

For me, the order goes:

Contra 4
Other Contras

Contra 4 is so mind-blowingly good and hardcore, it seriously made my year. I haven't played SS or HC yet, so who knows...I may like them better once I play it. But this one beats out Part 3 AND the original, something I NEVER thought it would do.

Yup Shattered Soldier rules.

Contra HC is still my fave, but SS comes a really close second.

Love Contra SS too,it`s(in my opinion)the best Contra-Game along with Hard Corpse!
But overall all Konami Contras are very good.Neo Contra has not the REAL 2d gameplay but is a great game though. You love the gamestyle of Shock Troopers,so Neo Contra is a must-have!
