It figures someone would have to enjoy check points...

I mean, if everyone HATED checkpoints, why would they make them?

The Gradius and R-Type series are both very popular and checkpoint games (and I don't think that's a coincidence).

x-multiply and xexex are checkpoint-forcepod hories. Both with tentacle pods.

Cosmic Cop / Gallop is actually really fun ...for the first few levels only, then it gets stupid hard. (Can anyone actually beat this? The last boss gets my vote for Hardest Boss Ever. Even saving like crazy I just can't do it.)

There are a couple CFHs with dragons for forcepods. I don't know these very well, but Dragon Breed looks good and Saint Dragon looks less good.

I can one-credit clear the first loop on Gallop. Though it seems quite difficult at first, it's a real blast once you can start speeding through the stages.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

After reading this thread and contributing yesterday (where I basically said I preferred one-credit play over credit feeding and continues) I thought a good session with Gradius V was worth dabbling in.

First off, I love the Gradius series, and until now have always just played each version playing one credit games (and while I can get quite a way, I have certainly never neared a 1CC!) but taking on board some comments in this thread, I had a go just using (but not mercilessly feeding) a few credits, and I have to admit, with checkpoint shmups, I can see the benefits of doing just that. They basically do work well as shmupping equivalent to a modern console game that uses a memory card, where you just keep on trucking till you complete it.

So I accept the 1CC school of thought shouldn't always dominate the shmup as there are some game models that reward reserved credit feeding - I just prefer playing to the old 'one credit and that's it' approach.

This is the biggest and funniest oxymoron I've heard all year. The fact that the poster was genuine makes it even better. Thanks for the laugh Smot =D

Shienryu isn't BAD, but it isn't good either. If not for the poor weapon powerup/down design that forced them to add checkpoints that don't really fix the problem much, it'd be a great game. To me checkpoints are just a sign of overall bad game design.

Actually, now that I think about it, if you're going to credit feed and want checkpoints to help practice rough spots, Under Defeat is about your best bet (only checkpoints when you credit feed). I hated the slow pace and lack of bullets in the game though.

The way I play with electronic toys is better than the way you play with electronic toys.

Give Trigon a go. Figuring out how to survive each checkpoint is half the fun. :D

There's also Guxt. It's also free, small, and has very nice 8-bit music.

I recommend you grow some skills and stop using credits altogether.
You haven't really beaten a shoot 'em up until you have 0-credited it. Wahahaha! [insane laughter]

Fire Shark! Though, I'm unsure to whether the arcade version has checkpoints; the Genesis version does. I also didn't see Nexzr mentioned-- that's a fairly decent shooter which is worth at least one play-through.

There's nothing wrong with credit feeding when playing for fun. I find it helpful when I first get a game and slowly fall away from it as I improve. For that, checkpoints are very useful.

Though the accepted definition of beating a shmup is 1ccing it, it is pretty rude and juvinile to post items such as "credit feeding is for losers" when someone asks. If anything makes me wonder if this board is slipping towards the quality of the GameFaqs forums, it is that and not someone asking about checkpoint shmups.

The U.S. ver. MVS Viewpoint can respawn from last death...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

If you select 2-player simultaneous mode in the arcade operator's menu screen of the USA MVS version of Viewpoint, it's possible to respawn at the exact point of death rather than having to restart at fixed restarting point set by CPU... ^_~

I don't like shooters that allow you to immediately respawn where you die. I find that it makes otherwise great shooters like Darius Gaiden and R-Type Leo too easy because you can chip away at a tough boss, die, come back and repeat the process as often as you like.
Try 1CC Darius Gaiden. Good luck, you'll need it!

People tell me that one is easy to 1cc with a fast autofire actually-- that the bosses don't last very long compared to the stock speed or the alternating buttons technique.

yes

That ABDGLQV path everyone was using isn't very difficult though, even without autofire. Shield = lol

I don't know, I kind of like checkpoints. You can credit feed and still feel somewhat of an accomplishment.

The Daioh/Shienryu series has a fantastic set up.
Checkpoints during the level (good one's, too) and continues at the bosses! Least frustrating and most challenging setup ever.
The other bosses let you continue fighting them when you make a blunder, but the last boss forces you to be GOOD!!!!
