Any modern shmups with chunky graphics?

Post by 320x240 »

It seems modern means flat and anemic looking. What happened to the chunky graphics of the past? After all it is possible to make chunky graphics in higher-resolutions too. I guess the punters only wants "special effects" and shiny graphics, even though said effects contribute to the flatness.

Anyway, this thread is meant for recommendations.

Are there any modern shmups that have both a high resolution and chunky graphics?

I had some doujin that was hi-res but with fake scanlines, looked pretty cool. It was a R-Type clone, but i forgot the name.

Prototype maybe?

As much as I don't like pre-rendered graphics I guess it usually ends up being more chunky than if it where hand-drawn.

Platypus is another that is a bit chunky.

What about verticals?

What do you mean by 'chunky'? To me 'chunky' implies a sort of Toaplan-esque style, in which case I'd say DDP DOJ would qualify. Not hi res however.

Most games that are 320x240 or something similar are sort of chunky by nature, because of the size of the pixels.

Explaining what I mean by chunky is rather hard, but basically it's the opposite of flat. It's about creating the illusion of mass and weight. I used the example of cell-based versus doll-based animation in another thread.

What I'm after is a game which have the chunkiness of older games (like Cho Ren Cha) coupled with the less course looks of higher resolutions (meaning 640x480 and higher).

I'd stop looking.

You could look at character portraits and scenes from low-res games to see how hi-res would look if any effort was applied to it.

Amen.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.
