Sengoku Blade> Oh good lord, who's going to cash out the huge rolls of cash for the saturn port anyway when an arcade perfect port can be had on the PS2 for cheap?
Seriously, both systems are worth investing in--get both.

Yes. They do. If they are the EXACT SAME, NO DIFFERENCE WHATSOEVER, then yes, better graphics equal a better game. I do love gameplay over graphics, but it's common sense good graphics and good game is better than slightly worse graphics and good game.pilotwings wrote:Like I said slightly better graphics don't make a better game.
Yeah. Style. You've just proven to us there's a very small reason to just get them both. ****.Check this out for style! "If two games are otherwise identical", then yes 2 different ships in 2 player means better game. It's quite simple.
Play double play. Two players can either screw you over or you can screw them over. Only VS shmups should be played with 2 players. And your comment about dodonapahi not meant to be played in 2 player is very meh!
Wait is what makes it an arcade mode, the original PCB can't always handle every bullet pattern correctly. If you mean it has Wait by default, then you can't play DDP if it never had slowdown (which is nice). If it has no wait by default, you couldn't play the arcade, normal DDP. But guessing by how you said "the PSX version is faster", I'm guessing Wait is on. I've never played the Saturn DDP.Also im not talking about wait in the options. Do you need to use a stupid wait in the saturn options? No you don't cause the saturn version isn't being silly!
No. You don't own anyone.=Ceph gets owned by pilotwings

You should just get them both. They have differences (<<) and there really is no reason to not do so, unless you can't seem to find it.
Oh and it's DODONPACHI. Learn to read, it's not Japanese. Or should I say moonspeak? Mmm, sig.
(Doodude, I apologize for wrecking your topic. Unfortunately, these topics just don't seem to handle well)

I never played the PS2 version of Sengoku Blade but I did play the Strikiers pack for the PS2 before.CMoon wrote:Sengoku Blade> Oh good lord, who's going to cash out the huge rolls of cash for the saturn port anyway when an arcade perfect port can be had on the PS2 for cheap?

It was terrible.

Yeah - Strikers I and II was set in that horrid little square in the middle of the screen on the PS2, and you couldn't change it as far as I could tell (On the UK release at least)Fighter17 wrote:I never played the PS2 version of Sengoku Blade but I did play the Strikiers pack for the PS2 before.CMoon wrote:Sengoku Blade> Oh good lord, who's going to cash out the huge rolls of cash for the saturn port anyway when an arcade perfect port can be had on the PS2 for cheap?

I don't think they were ports from the PS1 versions. Strikers II for the PS1 and Saturn were missing a lot of frames of animation. The PS2 pack had all the frames intact. I presume they were emulated or something.FIL wrote:The Strikers pack for PS2 was a bad port of the PS1 versions of Strikers I and II. There was tate if I recall, but that didn't really stop it from being a stinking turd of a conversion which failed to measure up to even the PS1 ports.
Edit: Then again, the PSX/Saturn port of Strikers II are meh. Just play it on the PCB/MAME.

Arcade DDP is pure DDP.Wait is slowdown found in the original PCB. Turn it off, and it's pure DDP. Turn it on and you have arcade mode. So yeah, you aren't able to play pure DDP with your Saturn mode.
If they designed a bullet pattern beyond what the PCB could handle, the slowdown was intentional. I think Cave is smart enough to remove slowdown if it shouldn't be there.
Anyway, isn't the only graphical difference in the explosions?

Exclusive in a pretty weak sense. These are all ports from the arcade, as I recall.jp wrote:I will (obviously) say Saturn because of the higher quality of gaming. Radiant Silvergun, Hyper Duel, Battle Garegga, Batsugun, Cotton 2, Cotton Boomerang, Rayforce (aka Layer Section aka Galactic Attack), and (one of my personal favorites) Blast Wind are exclusive.
R-Type Delta, Einhander, Gradius Gaiden, Harmful Park-- these are genuinely exclusive to PS1, if I'm not mistaken.

Not to mention that Rayforce isn't even weak-sense exclusive but is available in the PS2 (and XBox/PC?) Taito Memories collection.professor ganson wrote:Exclusive in a pretty weak sense. Anyhoo, standard answer to this question is "They're both good consoles with a good, solid shmup base and you can't go wrong with either one." Can we get on with our lives?
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

The PSX port is heavy on the slowdown in stage 7.Rob wrote:PS Strikers II (import) is nice, though the graphics don't seem quite right. Better than many other 32-bit era ports.
Not perfect in certain areas but good enough port (or so what I herd). I still think it's better to play the PSX version.Rob wrote:I think you can get this on the PSP now.Gradius Gaiden

...and has quite a number of issues with it as well, such as horrendous slowdown on stage6 and patchy slowdown on other stages (particularly stage4); messily done stage transitions; some things missing from stages compared to the PSX version; lack of more useful display options (either midget 'original' or super-stretched, and that's it); poor sound balance between music, SFX and voices...BrianC wrote:PSP port of Gradius Gaiden is missing 2 player...
If you're going to take Gradius Gaiden on the go, just rip the PSX version and use that in POPS.

Thanks for the heads up. That sounds like a valid option if I get a PSP, since I have the PSX version. I heard it's a pain to mod, though. For now, I think I'll just stick to Nemesis, Gradius Galaxies, and the DS Gradius in Konami Arcade DS for my portable Gradius fix.Icarus wrote:...and has quite a number of issues with it as well, such as horrendous slowdown on stage6 and patchy slowdown on other stages (particularly stage4); messily done stage transitions; some things missing from stages compared to the PSX version; lack of more useful display options (either midget 'original' or super-stretched, and that's it); poor sound balance between music, SFX and voices...BrianC wrote:PSP port of Gradius Gaiden is missing 2 player...

Action Replays are your friend when it comes to playing PS1 imports on a US console. But first you'll need to find an older model Playstation (the ones with the little port in the back) to use them.doodude wrote:Does either system have an adapter of some kind in which to play imports on US systems?

I went to the local Vintage Stock game store today just to look around & sort of answered my own question concerning Sega Saturn or Playstation.
They had a very long wall full of PS2 games.
I finally found the only 2 dozen Sega games they had on the lower shelf of a table display where they had the discount N64 Wrestling, Madden & hockey carts.

Agreed, though oddly enough, one of the only companies (if not the only) to bring Saturn shmups to the US was Acclaim. What's even stranger is that they arrived intact, despite the name change to Galactic Attack for Raystorm/Layer Section.BulletMagnet wrote:Well, as has been said, to get a lot of the good stuff on the Saturn (shmups and otherwise) you've got to import.

I thought the Saturn had more unique games. The Dungeons and Dragons Final Fight-esque games, Castlevania, Darius G, and Dragon Force. And it's been said, if you want the good games you have to import. Speaking of which, I had my Saturn modded by a store known as playthegames.com back in 01. Anyone know what happened to that store?

Castelvania is a port of the PSX game with odd extras. Darius Gaiden is the game on Saturn to which you are reffering. There's also a different game called G Darius on Arcade, PS2, and PSX. Darius Gaiden has a JP only version on PSX, a stand alone PC version, and is also in collections on PS2, PC, and Xbox (EU only). The Saturn one is probably the best console version of Darius Gaiden, though.DawnPatrol wrote:Castlevania, Darius G
