All the amiga and C64 shmups, with the only exception of Apidya - it has a horrible pseudo-anime chick.
Do you want a list?
Also, Viewpoint. Square and manly.
And SWIV, every crazy squarejawed marinehead warmonger's wet shmup dream. Why didn't you list every possible shmup from 1903 to 1990?

Don't know if you're friends are anti "oldies" but:
Defender
Galaga
Xevious
Omega Fighter
Also (I think these contain minor character stuff, but other-wise rule):
Blazing Star
Pulstar
Rayforce

Task Force Harrier you fucking retards. There's one woman in it but she gets nowhere near the controls of a plane.

This is different. This is the dose to counteact the clout of moe and lolis pervading most games nowdays.
We need some serious MANLY action Contra-style.

My firends are actually pro-oldies. They think gaming nowdays is too easy, and likewise think much anime is shit with all of the visual-novel inspired shows being adopted (with the exception of the giant-robot ones). That said, they think everything was better in the 80's.
And I'm inclined to agree. I'm sick and tired of slice-of-life, especially when they start creeping into my games. I want some ACTION. I WANT TO SEE SHIT EXPLODE.

Gate of Thunder and Lords of Thunder are pretty damn manly.
In fact, does it get much manlier than the Gate
intro ?
Oh, and Cho Aniki.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

I'd say, if it has dance music in the game, it has to move down the list. Same for orchestral scores.

Raiden Fights is already on the list under "Raiden series."
Psyvariar added to anime influenced list

Fire Shark and Flying Shark, even a woman can play it and grow hair on her chest, thereby feeling very manly.
Also these 2 games have nothing cute about them.

Yeah, I'd like to put that on another list, though. Under the same category as Megablast (Taito) and Cho Aniki: bizzare shmups.

Cyvern could be in that list too. Sure, it has dragons, giant insects and steam trains, but it's way too dark to be anything near cute'em up. Same goes for Gigawing and to some extent Darius.
Oh and how could you forget Jets'n'guns. It doesn't take itself too seriously, but it has big guns, WW2-style fighters and corpses flying off destroyed enemy planes. And there's even penis-shaped carrier named U.S.S Impotence, can't get any more badass than that.

It can't be. Women are scared of bugs... which is also why they don't test games.

Forgotten Worlds-The heroes are manly men who talk tough and fight their foes without shirts.
Zero Wing EU MD-The heroes are too manly for proper grammar. They also fight for GREAT justice, which is much more manly than regular justice.

What about Last Hope ?. That's not a game for wussy pussies, and it's the perfect example of 80s type of shooter made in new century.
