So, I'm compliling a list os STGs with the least/no cutesy stuff in it for a couple of buddies. That means Parodius and Touhou (as well as 80% of most doujin shmups out there) are definately out.

I know Kamui, R-Type, and Ikaruga take their subject matter seriously. Even some "generic" shmups with little/no story seem to have that gritty tone. From what I can list off the top of my head:

If I see another 'gritty', po-faced STG I will kill myself. Leave the post-apocalyptic settings for 10 year olds. Now i've realised how shit the world is, I want schoolgirls on broomsticks, flying pig girls, and the brightest shades of pink possible. Anything in fact, to take my mind off the fact that soon everyone will be dust and that there is no meaning to anything.

Ikaruga also has a chick pilot. Plus Batsugun has that cool 80's vibe going over it, so it checks out...

Crap...I forgot about the original TSS...Even then, that goofy hick Twinklestar does help matters much.

I feel reluctant to add Area 88 since it has an anthropomorphic dolphin...But considering the ending...(Might have to make another list for Radiant Silvergun and Under Defeat that has moments of lightheartedness but still retains an air of seriousness to it.)

i've had it with all these tanks and helicopters.
though literal Blue Skies are hard to implement in the verti's, i'm all pro the happification of the genre.
