Survey for a Research on the lexis(unique words) of Shmups
Hi!
I'm an undergraduate student from Singapore that is currently doing a research paper on the lexis of Shmups.
I have some survey questions that seeks to ask what is the meaning that you think some of the words that I have included in the survey convey and follow up questions for constructing a sentence for each of the words.
Please note that the words are to be confined to the genre of Shmups, i.e the usage of the words within the genre itself and not the normal everyday usage of the words.
My purpose of the survey is to gather introspective evidence(mental intuitions) on how Shmup gamers personally think that the words are used within the Shmups gaming context
Your help would be appreciated!
The survey links are below. And it is divided into 3 parts because surveymonkey only restricts 10 questions to each survey for the free version.
Part 1

Part 2

Edit: sorry, i missed that "personally" part, even though it's highlighted

Thanks, do you mean that the m consonantal sound is not pronounced? As in Shups.EOJ wrote:Rhymes with "cups". I assume you're just interested in the vowel quality, as the initial cluster should be quite clear, with no variation.popsune wrote:Just curious, how do you guys pronounce the word shmups?

No, I mean it is pronounced. [shm] is a consonant cluster, and one that English speakers can pronounce. The "sh" is a voiceless alveo-palatal fricative, in case you are familiar with the technical features of speech sounds.popsune wrote:

I dunno much terminology, but Tate is a screen setting (turn your TV sideways) prefered because it looks like an arcade game or the arcade original. Core, I have no clue. Popcorn refers to popcorn enemies, those weak one shot kill enemies that come in hundreds, used mainly for chaining. Spam, is refering to bullets (is that right?) where when a boss or you put a lot more bullets than usual/needed. I do believe the player spam goes with point blanking?Elgin McQueen wrote:Tate, core, popcorn and spam meant nothing to me. Still too much of a newbie I guess.

It's what you shoot when fighting a boss in the Gradius series. Sometimes the games will even give you a much-needed hint, like "Shoot the core" or "Shoot it in the core" or "Destroy the core," without which we shmuppers would be lost.LGB wrote:Core, I have no clue.Elgin McQueen wrote:Tate, core, popcorn and spam meant nothing to me.
