Survey for a Research on the lexis(unique words) of Shmups

Post by popsune »

Hi!

I'm an undergraduate student from Singapore that is currently doing a research paper on the lexis of Shmups.

I have some survey questions that seeks to ask what is the meaning that you think some of the words that I have included in the survey convey and follow up questions for constructing a sentence for each of the words.

Please note that the words are to be confined to the genre of Shmups, i.e the usage of the words within the genre itself and not the normal everyday usage of the words.

My purpose of the survey is to gather introspective evidence(mental intuitions) on how Shmup gamers personally think that the words are used within the Shmups gaming context

Your help would be appreciated!

The survey links are below. And it is divided into 3 parts because surveymonkey only restricts 10 questions to each survey for the free version.

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

On a more serious note, sounds like a cool study. I took the survey, was quick and painless.

heh. I'd like to see a shooter with popcorn enemies that look like popcorn, and as you fight them, the 'Popcorn' tune plays madly in the background.

Maybe the pop of the explosions could be timed to the music. It would be the best game ever.

Hi, does anyone know if there is an active chatroom for Shmups, eg. at IRC(which server) and if there are any online magazines devoted to Shmups. Thanks.

Rhymes with "cups". I assume you're just interested in the vowel quality, as the initial cluster should be quite clear, with no variation.

Thanks, do you mean that the m consonantal sound is not pronounced? As in Shups.

No, I mean it is pronounced. [shm] is a consonant cluster, and one that English speakers can pronounce. The "sh" is a voiceless alveo-palatal fricative, in case you are familiar with the technical features of speech sounds.

Tate, core, popcorn and spam meant nothing to me. Still too much of a newbie I guess.

I dunno much terminology, but Tate is a screen setting (turn your TV sideways) prefered because it looks like an arcade game or the arcade original. Core, I have no clue. Popcorn refers to popcorn enemies, those weak one shot kill enemies that come in hundreds, used mainly for chaining. Spam, is refering to bullets (is that right?) where when a boss or you put a lot more bullets than usual/needed. I do believe the player spam goes with point blanking?

Just think of "tate" as one less syllable than "rotate" and you'll do fine.

Core, I have no clue.
It's what you shoot when fighting a boss in the Gradius series. Sometimes the games will even give you a much-needed hint, like "Shoot the core" or "Shoot it in the core" or "Destroy the core," without which we shmuppers would be lost.

Oh. It's usually acompanied by a Shoot the, or a Destroy the, so I was a bit confused. Thanks.
