Eh, the best I can do is offer to let them play if one sees me playing a shooter. Like the girl who likes Super Star Soldier. When I was playing Mushi she said "Wow, I couldn't deal with that at all... way too many bullets." Then another day she came by while I was playing Super Star Soldier and she said "See? Now this I might be able to live through for a couple minutes." I offered her the controller, she agreed, and enjoyed it ^_^ She was pretty awful though =P

My sister isn't terribly good at them either, but she could get there. She and I both inherited my dad's amazing hand-eye coordination and reflexes. She definitely has an innate gaming ability, she'd just have to practice. Not that she has time for video games though.

Females were born to do constructive things, boys were born to do destructive things. The END.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

First off: I do, and am one, and not affraid to say that I am. I hate score attack in Gradius V (well, not really... just a bit rough for me at times)

2nd: My mom played Gradius V with me a few times, but was getting pwned as first started. I also introduced her to R-Type Final, and on THAT GAME however, she did as good as I did in stage 3-1 (City - Battleship Raid), without even taking a hit!

My 6 year old loves Battle Garegga and Batsugun. Every time she sees daddy (aka SonicR) playing she will ask him what he is playing and can she play.

If I ever have a daughter, I'll make sure she learns to play shmups as soon as she can learn to use a joystick.

She will destroy every score on this board. You'll see.

No, it's just a fixed phrase, lit. "big after life".

Generally used when really old people die without complications.

I have been an arcade regular most of my life and I've never seen a girl play a shmup seriously, with their heart in it. Thinking about that makes it seem extremely rare, but I'm not sure if that's necessarily the case, since I have also not seen too many guys play a shmup seriously in person, either. I think my personal experiences just have to do with living in the states. I need to get out of this country.

Those pictures of Japanese girls playing shmups in their huge fur-lined jackets make me feel warm inside. Am I a creep?

Theres a girl in my area named Jen that plays fighting games, but not shmups (to my knowledge). She's actually better than me at Capcom fighters. Her pic is here on my gaming site:

Yeah they do, well my gf does anyways. She also held the high score for Slap Fight until recently  (I reclaimed my diginity :P) I think she prefers puzzle games like Super puzzle fighter and puyo puyo etc.

She doesn't like the arcades so much, and we never really hit them often in Japan or here in Oz. She likes the odd game at home though, esp. two player. :)

my g/f tries to humour me, and play the odd credit on a shmup. i did manage to get her into super stardust hd. but she's more into my boards like super puzzle fighter (to the point where she bugs me to set it up). i also think girls are more likely to get into a game if it's 2-player, or co-operative in some way. the idea of spending hours on end learning chains and combos on your own in a darkened room seems a bit too dorky and anti-social (which is obviously untrue). not that she does that with kingdom hearts or anythng...

she also thinks cave games will give me epilepsy :)

Indeed. Brooding over Ikaruga chains in a dark corner is all the rage with social butterflies these days.

Girls definitely seem more drawn to puzzle games or cooperative games. I wonder what it is that makes puzzle games so universally appealing? An ex-girlfriend of mine wasn't much into video games at all, but she played bejewled non-freaking-stop.

puzzle games are not intimidating to new players, and very addictive to play. i remember reading that bubble bobble was designed primarily as a two-player game (to the point where you can't actually finish the game properly on your own) because the designer wanted couples to play it together.

twinkle star sprites is another good one :)

i think the problem with girls playing a shmup seriously, is that the idea of making the number next to your initials be a higher number is a bit too abstract of a reward. the characterisation in shmups is weak, story is weak, no emotional resolutions at the end of it, no customisable creative input you can make as a player, etc etc.

also, some studies show that some women wont learn hand-eye co-ordination tasks as quickly as men; and the same again for spatial awareness (ie your judgment of seeing a bullet being shot, and approximating in your mind what line it will travel, and whether it will hit your ship or not).

but conversely, women often have much higher emotional intelligence (reading social situations, body language etc), and communicative abilities.

which is why men hate asking for directions, and women hate parking

Haha yeah, i cringed a little as well. It seems to be a dying/dead practice though. It's much, much rarer than it used to be - probly been a year since the last time i came across a site doing that, and i'm online all the damn time.
