do girls play shooters?

Post by VicViper_Mk2 »

when i step in my local arcade, you will always see a few girls either by themselves or with their bf. but when you take a sweep, you'll see that not many actually plays anything, they usually watch their bf play, or play with them. only a few of them would actually play alone. so at the time i thought: do girls play shump? and the answer is yes. but do they play good? well thats another thing.

an example, a girl was playing time crisis 4 (not a shump but i have reason to mention this) in the game an far away enemy has fired a critical shot, an average player would have seen this coming from a mile long and reacted, but she just stared at it and took it when all she had to do was to step off the peddle, and i came to the conclusion: no reaction. true to the words, she lost very fast.

next, she sat at a Raiden DX machine and started. first thing she did is press the shot button (even through there is nothing on the screen yet, a behaviour i witness many people doing) or so she though. Boom, it was a bomb button (the machine use to be a 4 button beat-em-up, but from experience i know that its usually the far left most button for shot) ok, so she starts off one bomb short, for a while it wasn't a problem as she manage to get every power-up without getting hit, and even manage to defeat the first boss. but when she reached the second boss, she just crumbled when the central gun started doing the spread, even forgetting she has bombs.

from my point of view, shump require good spatial perception(wahhh...sci-fi otaku side surfacing) you must keep track of every shot fired, from you or the enemy, the path they go. even if there is hundreds of bullets.

so there you have it. I understand that playing shump or any other game for that matter, it just takes pratice and dedication, then anyone can be good, regardless of gender. of course, this is just what i observed so far. i myself grew up among shooters, unlike most girls i strived to win, and win big.

if anyone has any observation of their own, or to add anything i missed, please let me hear it. much appreciated

Not a lot of girls play shooters around here, period. Except that one girl in Japan that looped Progear?

BTW, get your ass to Pacific Mall today. :3

Zuho. She's just the only somewhat famous one. I saw a girl playing Mushihime-sama Futari last night. She kind of sucked though.

Yes, there are less girls playing shmups.. In fact there less girls playing acrade games. But for the few that DO play, I don't see they are playing worser than boys. It just that there are more boys playing shmups and thus most of the top players are boys.

The two girls I meet in acrade both play mushihime sama better than me....

My sister used to play Salamander MSX with me when we were kids. When I bought my PS1, it came with 5 games, no shmups, and she asked me "What, there are no shoot'em ups?"

Now we don't even talk with each other, and she doesn't play games anymore.

One thing I never admited before, there was an Amiga game called Qwak, she was better than me on that game.....

I tried to introduce the genre to my girlfriend, but she didn't care about it. I thought she would like it... though she barely play any games, she usually enjoys the simplier ones (The less buttons she has to press, the better). There are 4 games (or variations of those games) I've seen she truly enjoying: Pacman, Arkanoid, Bomberman and Puyo Puyo.

Edit: And I just remembered it, my father's 2nd wife has a daughter from her 1st marriage that could 1cc the MSX version of R-Type, something I never managed to do it. I doubt she still play games those days (She's now a mother, and I haven't see her for like 7 years now), but back when she was 15 years old, she was one of the best videogame players I had ever seen. She finished lots of MSX games most of us couldn't finish, she was freaking unbeatable on the Mega-Drive game "Lakers vs Celtics", and I saw her looping Truxton on the Mega-Drive too. Shame she had such a short career :)

There's already a thread somewhere about this, IIRC. I saw a lot of good players at HEY that were women.

And then there's that girl playing Ketsui, with no clothes at all, in a japanese porno, apparently not very good at it. Anyone know the title? I need to track it down!!! :P

I've had at least two ex-girlfriends dabble in the genre after watching me play for disturbing amounts of time. If you head over to Ikaruga.co.uk, one of them actually posted some okay scores for Chapters 1 and 2 under the username iksetsrm, and the other wasn't too bad at surving for awhile in Mushihimesama.

ahhh...so there were topics like this before, i should have expected so.

looking through them, the picture some of you guys took of japanese girls playing shump is awesome. so does that mean a lot of you guys are living in japan? if so, i envy you guy, arcades in the west is almost dead, let alone shump. one of these day, got to check out a genuine japanse arcade with tons of shump "dreams"

I introduced my girlfriend to shmups via Cosmo Gang. Much more accessible, and a better game when played with two players (helping them out while playing motivates them more).

SHMUPS

Not with UM.

Also, why does it matter if girls play shooters? I'd rather they didn't.

In my experience, I've known girls that enjoyed shmups, but no more than video games in general, i.e., they'd probably have had just a good of time playing Shinobi or something.

Then next person talking about this gets it.

VicViper_Mk2,
You perv spying on unsuspecting girls, you analyzing everything she does. Tie her shoelaces, what does it mean?
just kidding.
I say we quickly call this day em pirate day, har
shmups be not for puny womens, move out the way, woman, har.
You never use the words girl and sucked in the same sentence, that's just common practice.
Still, VicViper_Mk2, nice anal-ysation btw.

try telling that to Zuho and see what she'll say.

and D, either there is something wrong with my computer displaying your message, or it just didn't make sense when it left your head. what do you got against girls playing shump? just because not many plays doesn't mean they shouldn't, who are you to tell them what they shouldn't play.

Lets just call them "shootemups" or "shooting games" already.
A "shmup" sounds like something you go to the hospital to get medication for.
