The consensus is that it is unplayable since there is no tate.CMoon wrote: Is there any general consensus of original or arcade settings for the monitor. I can't even tell if 'original' is stretched or the playing field is just wider.
Arcade mode is a substitute for that. Notice that the screen scrolls horizontally with the ship movement. All Original does is display the entire playing field. Like a regular Giga Wing. I could not have asked for a better port in that regard. That is very close to how I would've wanted it originally, a nearly full screen yoko vert.

Yeah, the resolution is a bit wonky but after putting in little more than an hour I'm getting half way through level 4 (level 5 is clearly a bit beyond my ability.) I think there is a death here and there that might have been aided by the poor resolution, but in general it is very playable and fun.
I understand why people don't want to endorse poor ports, but Mushi and Ibara aren't great ports (arguably no worse than this) and everyone keeps buying/playing them.

I don't think its unplayable, I just don't like playing vertical games in horizontal. In this day and age of arcade->console ports, do you think it would have killed them to add a tate option? Because of this, I get a cheap/lazy feeling about the port, and can't motivate myself to start playing it. Too bad, as the few minutes I have tried it, it seemed like a nice follow-on to the series.Rob wrote:The consensus is that it is unplayable since there is no tate.CMoon wrote: Is there any general consensus of original or arcade settings for the monitor. Despite the Cave ports' faults, I'm afraid GWG's port is in a league all its own in this area.CMoon wrote:I understand why people don't want to endorse poor ports, but Mushi and Ibara aren't great ports (arguably no worse than this)

From what I've read, the arcade version runs at 60 fps, while the port runs at 30.KNTain wrote:Really? whoaThe framerate is actually superior to the arcade version.
Normally I don't judge much on graphics, but I think GW2, and even GW1 were graphically superior to this game.
I also think the scoring mechanics are a little inferior as well. One second remaining from the boss fight at the end of the level is worth as much as a leftover bomb. And also, I liked the score attack modes of GW1/2 much better. The extra multiplier was much more fun than the ascending main multiplier. The fact that it already starts building (although not a significant amount) even on the ship selection screen really screams rush-job port to me.

The arcade version has frequent sudden bursts of really jerky slowdown while the port runs at a pretty constant framerate throughout.tada wrote:From what I've read, the arcade version runs at 60 fps, while the port runs at 30.KNTain wrote:Really? whoaThe framerate is actually superior to the arcade version.

Hmm I thought the home port sort of did that too. I remember the whole thing kind of running with the consistency of a mid-90s FMV game. 'course skipping from 60 is more jarring than skipping from 30.Twiddle wrote: The arcade version has frequent sudden bursts of really jerky slowdown while the port runs at a pretty constant framerate throughout.

At least ten all-clears in Rob's high score thread. I've gotten to stage 5's boss on one credit, and I've barely put any serious work into that game.

I can play alot of other shooters (mars matrix, giga wing 2) with very similar gameplay that aren't anywhere as ass end ugly as this. That's why I didn't bother with it after I bought it...... sold it ASAP.
Is the arcade version alot better?

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

they are MUCH better PS2 games though, if the PS2 version of giga wing generations is a better port than them... then it was a shittier game than ibara or mushi couldn't ever be.but Mushi and Ibara aren't great ports (arguably no worse than this) and everyone keeps buying/playing them.

Not everyone loves Cave. Mushi in particular is for me a stunning piece of crap. That general consensus is different than mine doesn't make general consensus right.Strider77 wrote:they are MUCH better PS2 games though, if the PS2 version of giga wing generations is a better port than them... then it was a shittier game than ibara or mushi couldn't ever be.but Mushi and Ibara aren't great ports (arguably no worse than this) and everyone keeps buying/playing them.

Aye, no game/dev is for everybody.
Always hate seeing people trash a game and saying how "downright awful" or something it is, just because THEY dont like it, but bunches of others might disagree.
Like, I never really got into Garegga much, despite hearing how awesome it is from everyone here. Just wasnt my cup of tea, but Im not gonna bash it cause of that.
I havent gotten to try out Generations yet.... I HAVE a copy, but I need to wait until my new loader disc arrives in the mail...... and I get sick of everyone bashing on it without giving real reasons beyond "graphics suck".
Or even things like the port of Mushihime.... I have that, on PS2, and it's a favorite of mine, period. I fail to see the problems with it, either that or the problems are just ones that dont affect me much.
Would I pay a gazillion dollars to buy a PCB of it, a game I already have, because "the port is sub-par"? Um, no.
Beh, sorry, sort of a mini-rant here, but Im fulla caffiene at the moment, haha.....
I'll stop now, really.....

I am kind of one of those, though I did like Mushihimesama(original mode), and I can play DoDonPachi for fun with no regard for bees or chains. DonPachi is my favorite Cave game but then it isn't really "Cave".
Learning about myself and my games that I am play, I learn that I favor modern games less and am favor classic old fashioned games more.
As for Giga Wing Generations, I didn't like it then because I guess it didn't feel like the Dreamcast games, I should give it another go though and see how a 30+ year old man is see these games.
I have had too much Red Bull

Aye, I dont like the chaining-style scoring systems much myself: it's the only thing I dont like about Cave.
I usually play their games for survival, instead of scoring, with a few exceptions (like Progear and Dangun Feveron).
I couldnt ever seem to get into Ikaruga, either, for that same reason. But I'll give that one another go when it hits Live.

I think the ultimate turn off was when it was described as being a puzzle game

Can you imagine a REAL shooter with the game mechanics of Ikaruga. You know, something like Garegga, but keep the color switching thing. I've always enjoyed the concept, but never found it much fun beyond level 2.
Hmmm, maybe someone will make a doujin like this...
