What time period/era does Progear No Arashi take place in?
The above title says it all... ^_~
And would you say that it takes place in the steampunk era or what (or perhaps in the day & age of "Laputa: Castle of the Air" timeline)?
The technology shown in Progear seems to indicate that it's progressed quite a bit (perhaps the next technological evolution of the "Steam Age" period ala Steamboy anime)...

Sure, I know the Progear universe is fictional...but Cave would've been wise to have set it in a specific time period to get the storyline straight from the get-go. ^_~bsidwell wrote:A completely made-up one. Being more specific than that seems a bit pointless.
It's interesting to read the Progear World newspaper and learn what happens to the good guys in their fight against another nation...
It would seem the state-of-the-art technologies shown in Progear seem to place it in the WWI era but with very advanced weaponry capabilities (and WMDs included as well) given the styling and overall visual appeal of the end-stage bosses and smaller fry, don't you think so? ^_~
The energy requirements of the huge hulking bememoths end-stage bosses must be insane -- what could be used to power them up in the first place? Steam power, atomic power, alternative universe that's powered by nuclear power, or what?
By going past the "safe level limits" of the exotic mechanical drive trains of their whimisical & fantastic designs (the stage bosses) -- they would simply overheat and explode without outside resistance interferance. Of course, there wouldn't be a story of the eternal struggle of good vs. evil then..... ^_~

If you wanted to sell to the masses in Japan, you would make an rpg like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. Or the pachislot games Cave makessikraiken wrote:The era where Cave made good shooters instead of this overly cutesy stuff they make now to just sell to the masses.
Also, I don't see how ESPGaluda is incredibly cutesy (yeah it has an anime look, but 99% of japanese games have an anime look).

For Rob,
LMAO...that's a good one -- a classic! I guess that means in "behind the scenes" of Progear, there are long-ass snaking AC cords that are tethered to them hulking bosses to make 'em work, hmmm? ^_~

Mushi was the real start. They are selling to the masses who are interested in playing shooters, not RPGs etc. Their artistic style sells to a certain crowd that just eats all that type of stuff up.mikwuyma wrote:If you wanted to sell to the masses in Japan, you would make an rpg like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. The games aren't necessarily bad or anything. I just personally think their game "quality" has just dropped in comparison to their past products.

Would take quite a bit of hamsters to power 'em bosses senario -- sounds good. ^_~BulletMagnet wrote:I'm fond of the "hamster on (preferably highly squeaky) wheel someplace in the engine" theory myself.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:I guess that means in "behind the scenes" of Progear, there are long-ass snaking AC cords that are tethered to them hulking bosses to make 'em work, hmmm? ^_~

Yeah, as we all know a game where the entire cast is under the age 12 isn't cutesy at all.sikraiken wrote:The era where Cave made good shooters instead of this overly cutesy stuff they make now to just sell to the masses.

There's a difference between Progear and the current stuff. : ) I like Fantasy Zone, and that's cutesy. I don't like the whole "animu" thing, as Twiddle called it, I guess.GaijinPunch wrote:Yeah, as we all know a game where the entire cast is under the age 12 isn't cutesy at all.sikraiken wrote:The era where Cave made good shooters instead of this overly cutesy stuff they make now to just sell to the masses.

I thought Inoue had some other words on it... maybe in the interview with him alone after he left Cave.
Source: here-Progear seems to appeal to a completely different taste than your last game, Guwange.
Inoue: We were initially told [by Capcom?] to "make a game which targets the Asian market", and there was a theory that for a shooter to be well-taken in Asia it's elements should include things like propellers and a WWII feel. For the characters, we did cell art resembling Studio Ghibli (*3) and other Japanese animations. Like with Disney products, we thought cell graphics would be easier to bring in general people.
IKD: In terms of the game [system], we went a little overboard in Guwange (laughs), and wanted to make things simple this time... if possible even taking out the scoring and bullet swarms (laughs).
I like it all. If the game is fun, I'm not going to let some big tits ruin it for me. They're the only old school shooting game company left, and they do a good job. There's a difference between Progear and the current stuff.

Progear's design is fine. I don't like this:

Touche'. They have much more issues w/ the music though than the characters, IMHO.sikraiken wrote:Progear's design is fine. I don't like this:

Haha, from the stuff I've heard, yes. Also, I could do without the high pitched girly voices. Some people like that though, and Cave is a business, so they do what they have to do.GaijinPunch wrote:Touche'. Urgh, you´re right. She´s a tranny.hermosaguy wrote: She has man hands!
I still haven´t played Ibara, but I liked the artwork in it a lot more than that in Progear. Progear seems more like Jules Verne to me, while Ibara has this bittersweet thorn/rose theme all over it. And I find the implementation of tits and ass in Ibaras artwork a lot more elegant than other japanese games.

I like PC Engine Fan X!'s original question because there's something distinctive about Progear's setting and overall aesthetic that I haven't been able to pin down. The newspaper thing suggests a time in the past century, but I haven't really given it much thought. I'm usually too busy trying to get diamonds to notice whatever clues the game may hold about its location and time.

Yeah. I was going to link the main image, but that's in fragments. That's the first link on the character page.moozooh wrote:Searching for an example to illustrate his point, perhaps.Icarus wrote:PPS: What were you doing on the Pink Sweets website in the first place, SiK?
I'm not into that type of stuff, Icarus. : )
