You've got show-sama listed up there twice. The Coop wrote:

It's current as of this moment I believe, pending what's up with maxi's score. So if DJI wants to use it to help speed up his update, he can.

The graphical presentation, the music, the artistic theme behind the enemy designs, the many choices in stages, the multiple endings, the expanded Darius gameplay style that's been there since the franchise's inception, the simple but flexible scoring system that doesn't involve insane amounts of chaining or juggling, the challenge level (sans autofire), the fact that it has a good amount of enemy fire and firing patterns without getting into "bullet hell" levels... there are plenty of reasons to enjoy playing it if you ask me.BulletMagnet wrote:Someday I'm going to have to ask someone to explain to me exactly what they like about this game, aside from the presentation and branching stages...there are many titles that I don't personally like but can see why others would like them, but in all honesty this one's got me completely stumped as to why anyone would willingly play it.
No one's calling you a liar, maxi. But a 12,000,000 point bonus that comes out of nowhere is a bit tough to accept without proof regarding how to get it... especially on a game like this that's been around for a while, that's all. As such, I think you can understand people's skepticism on this.maxi wrote:This is the problem, I don`t use the bug on the first boss.
I just don`t know how I make this score.
I was on the stage `E`, so I stop to look to the score at about 2 million. On the stage `I`, aproximately on the final, I give a look on it and more than 14 million was there. I was so shocked that I lose my two last lives in a very short time. So, I write the score on paper, wait the the game displays the ranking again after the demo, and is there, 14.478.900.
I will try to make it again, on the way ACEI, but if I can`t, you guys determine if my score is valid or not. I only don`t want no one here calling me a liar, because I`m not.
As noted in my disclaimer, no arguments here...The Coop wrote:The graphical presentation, the music, the artistic theme behind the enemy designs, the many choices in stages, the multiple endings...

Here's where most of my frustration with the game lies - most of the "challenge," as far as I'm concerned, comes from rampant invisi-bullets, legion super-memorizer cheesy/unavoidable deaths, a hitbox too big and handling too imprecise to dodge much of anything (in otherwords, in certain spots unless you have either a shield or bomb or can find an obscure safe spot, you're pretty much automatically dead), and a shamelessly Draconian, credit-munching power-down/rank system (about the only break it gives you is refilling your bombs after you die - small comfort, considering that certain areas are almost impossible to survive without them if you're below a certain weapon level). On top of that, it's nasty without autofire and a breeze with it. Bosses (especially sans autofire) take an absolute eternity to go down, making them unnecessarily boring and frustrating. In short, I find myself almost constantly grumbling at it, despite whatever strengths it may have....the challenge level (sans autofire), the fact that it has a good amount of enemy fire and firing patterns without getting into "bullet hell" levels...

You criticise people for their tastes in games anyway, BM.BulletMagnet wrote:Of course, if you like the game I'm not going to criticize you for it, but it does amaze me how drastically different people's tastes are, even just on this forum - in this game's particular case I simply can't ever see myself "getting" this game no matter how long I play it, and many of my favorites inspire the exact same reaction among many others here. Rather fascinating, at least my geeky self thinks so.
Of course, I've forgotten that if something gets complained about often enough, it eventually becomes praiseworthy. Or somehow otherwise taboo, for reasons beyond my meager facilities.Icarus wrote:1) Yawn. That again.
Perhaps I'm the odd man out here, but I remain thankful that these "design decisions" have been largely abandoned by now (disclaimer - no, I am not saying that I wish horis would disappear forever). As far as I'm concerned, this didn't happen by chance.2) Welcome to horis.
3) Welcome to the mid-90s.
5) All older games without programmed autofire are like this. See Macross II, for example.
No other rank setup (Raizing included) has ever made me feel more like I'm being completely robbed, and that after dying once I ought to just reset.4) Like rank systems of this kind are surprising nowadays.
Ah, the spectre of the ever-elusive "win button" fantasy that's ruining hardcore shmupdom again, been awhile since that one's surfaced. Come on Icky, be reasonable - something doesn't have to be dull, drawn-out, and frustrating to be a satisfying challenge. Frankly, I'm not sure how the two could ever be one and the same.6) So you'd rather fight a Gradius Brain at the end of every stage?
So what exactly should I do when I dislike a game, just twiddle my thumbs for fear of someone disagreeing with me, or what? If nothing else, I'm confident in saying that whenever I do criticize something, I attempt to rise above the "LOL this game suxx0rz" (not to mention "learn 2 play") posts that tend to show up in said situations, and at least attempt to construct a coherent argument for my viewpoint, not to mention make plenty of allowances for personal preferences, and leave absolutes out of the equation. And I am especially careful to avoid criticizing members, or their tastes, instead of the games themselves. What anyone else likes to play has no effect on me - I do not see this, however, as a reason to not say what I think, in a civil manner. I'm not sure why you constantly detect personal slights coming from me, and act as if I'm some sort of stealthy, fork-tongued rabble-rouser who only you seem able to see through (the rest of the forum's under my spell, apparently, and doesn't know when it's being insulted). Frankly, I'm getting major flashbacks to my early days around here, and I figured that if anyone would be with me on wanting to leave that silliness behind, it'd be you.You criticise people for their tastes in games anyway, BM.
Why should this be any different?
If I've used that one before, it's been awhile. As for "getting" the game, you seem to love using that argument a lot.
I happen to disagree, put this fact, and my reasoning on it, out in the open a few posts ago, am open to rebuttals, and that's about where I leave it - not sure what makes these posts more inflammatory when I post them than when someone else does.FYI, I love this game. But I prefer G.Darius over it.
And the fact that the weapon power down from dying has been changed, and that there are more levels to the missiles and main gun.BulletMagnet wrote:In otherwords, "You can bomb now."The Coop wrote:...the expanded Darius gameplay style that's been there since the franchise's inception...Oh yeah, and capture midbosses. Not that simple gameplay in itself is a bad thing, but that wasn't the real problem I had with it...
I was thinking more along the lines of getting points for taking riskier paths, for trying to pick apart the bosses, and for going after those tough to grab orbs that control the mid-bosses. Also, most of those big end bonuses can't be gotten unless you take risks. This isn't a Compile gameBulletMagnet wrote:...and huge end bonuses? While I can't speak on your experiences, I can say that every death I've had in DG, I've seen what killed me... be it a bullet, a small outcropping on the foreground, or a speedy enemy that came flying up from below. I've never once had a bullet or enemy blink out on me ala Blazing Star. I've also never had a problem with the game's hit box, as I've squeezed through some very tight spreads and situations without getting hit... and I could even see my ship partially touched by what I was dodging. Perhaps this whole "modern day shmups having a two pixel hit box" thing has dulled your old-school dodging abilities a little?BulletMagnet wrote:Here's where most of my frustration with the game lies - most of the "challenge," as far as I'm concerned, comes from rampant invisi-bullets, legion super-memorizer cheesy/unavoidable deaths, a hitbox too big and handling too imprecise to dodge much of anything (in otherwords, in certain spots unless you have either a shield or bomb or can find an obscure safe spot, you're pretty much automatically dead), and a shamelessly Draconian, credit-munching power-down/rank system (about the only break it gives you is refilling your bombs after you die - small comfort, considering that certain areas are almost impossible to survive without them if you're below a certain weapon level). The interesting thing about the power down system is that it doesn't put you at an immediate disadvantage. For instance, dying before a boss will set the rank to a much easier point. I've killed Folding Fan in mere seconds compared to a fully powered level. Another thing is that powered down form the highest point will bring you to a level with a much faster rate of fire. Sometimes it seems as if you do much, much more damage than you were doing before.Anyway, as for the bosses and power down system...
So many shmups punish you with a powering down upon death, I don't see why this game would be one to piss you of with it. I've played very few shmups that didn't suck away firepower when you died. It's just part of the genre, for better or for worse. Even games like the almighty DoDonPachi drop your weapon power when you bite the dayglo-colored bullet.
And well, bosses are supposed to be hard. If you can kill it fast without a good fight (or a serious adjustment like what we've got here), then it wasn't much of a boss. The fact that DG's bosses do put up a fight when playing the game normally is one of DG's positives in my opinion
