I'd like to get into 3D shmups now

Post by TKGB_Mental_Gear »

I'm not the biggest shmup fan in the world but I have a liking for this genre. After getting Taito Legends 2 and enjoyed Darius-G and Raystorm, I decided to try out more 3D shmups. So what is a good choice to start for a beginning shmuper like me.

I was thinking of getting R-Type Final cuz I'm interested in the 100 extra ships in it.

Step 2 is done except I only got an arcade stick and nothing to save the game with.

Under Defeat
Einhänder
R-Type Delta

All are must-haves.

R-Type Final is not so good, unfortunately.

What do you mean when you say "3D Shmup"? When I think of 3D I think of Layer Section 2 and maybe Giga Wing 2 but I see a lot of people recommending everything.

I think he probably means polygonal shmups. I haven't played too many polygonal shmups, so I can't recommend too much, though I like Castle Shikigami 2. I also like Nanostray despite the flaws.

I'll put in my recommendation of R-Type Final. I have an uninfected view of it since I don't own Delta, & I think it's a fun game. Cool atmosphere.

Actually I do, just played it yesterday.
I guess it's bad because the enemies are sparse and the graphics are in some ways sub par. Also I have aquired a taste for Chaos Field, it's one of the few danmaku games available in America.

No mention of Shiki 2?
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

If it's 2D shmups with partially 3D gfx then there's loads, as have been mentioned. They don't have any special advantage gameplay-wise though, except that they sometimes look better.

The only 3D shmups I can think of that I have played would be Xyanide (Xbox) and Rez (PS2/DC), and even they aren't totally 3D. I did play the Silpheed demo (X360) but it was too busy for my liking, though it was proper 3D.

Einhänder looks better than most everything mentioned.
No mention of Shiki 2?
As a reason to not make shooters 3D.

There are worse. I popped in Gigawing 2 the other day. I'm going to have to vote it worst ship design ever. The game ain't half bad but wtf were they thinking w/ the ship? It looks like a fucking box.

There are some pretty nice looking things in Giga Wing 2, but also a fair amount of ugly. I think the ugliest thing of all are the bullets. 3D graphics can be fine but please don't make the bullets 3D. The color choices are also very poor.

Gradius V and Ikaruga are two of my favorite shmups and they'll last you a long time trying to 1CC them, unless you're crazy good. Border Down is good, Triggerheart Exelica is good although a bit easy, Psyvariar is also pretty good although it plays kind of differently. Oh yeah, and Under Defeat is very good although the scoring is kind of weird.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I'm not a big R-type fan so I wouldn't really recommend Final, but if it's your kind of game then I bet it will be enjoyable.

The backgrounds in Giga Wing 2 really remind me of Powerstone 2. If they took the ship design of the first game as well as the bullets and combined it with the backgrounds of the 2nd it'd be awesome. Great game still but I can nitpick if I want to...

Gigawing is one of those weird cases where each installment get progressively worse than the previous. Shikigami no Shiro would be another.

True 3D?

Starfox for SNES, overclocked. No slowdown. Good times.

Thunderforce V I enjoyed a lot of.

What about the Ray series? I usually hear Rayforce>Raystorm>Raycrisis for that one. I haven't played Crisis, but I like Force better than Storm (though I also like Storm).

I'm confused - opinions on R-Type Final seem to be fairly divided.
I haven't played it (no PS2) - I do own Delta though, which I like a lot (although PS1 polygons look fugly)

How can Final be worse?
