I'd like to get into 3D shmups now
I'm not the biggest shmup fan in the world but I have a liking for this genre. After getting Taito Legends 2 and enjoyed Darius-G and Raystorm, I decided to try out more 3D shmups. So what is a good choice to start for a beginning shmuper like me.
I was thinking of getting R-Type Final cuz I'm interested in the 100 extra ships in it.

I think he probably means polygonal shmups. I haven't played too many polygonal shmups, so I can't recommend too much, though I like Castle Shikigami 2. I also like Nanostray despite the flaws.JJG wrote:What do you mean when you say "3D Shmup"? When I think of 3D I think of Layer Section 2 and maybe Giga Wing 2 but I see a lot of people recommending everything.

Actually I do, just played it yesterday.
I guess it's bad because the enemies are sparse and the graphics are in some ways sub par. Also I have aquired a taste for Chaos Field, it's one of the few danmaku games available in America.
No mention of Shiki 2?

Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

If it's 2D shmups with partially 3D gfx then there's loads, as have been mentioned. They don't have any special advantage gameplay-wise though, except that they sometimes look better.
The only 3D shmups I can think of that I have played would be Xyanide (Xbox) and Rez (PS2/DC), and even they aren't totally 3D. I did play the Silpheed demo (X360) but it was too busy for my liking, though it was proper 3D.

There are worse. I popped in Gigawing 2 the other day. I'm going to have to vote it worst ship design ever. The game ain't half bad but wtf were they thinking w/ the ship? It looks like a fucking box.Rob wrote:As a reason to not make shooters 3D.No mention of Shiki 2?

There are some pretty nice looking things in Giga Wing 2, but also a fair amount of ugly. I think the ugliest thing of all are the bullets. 3D graphics can be fine but please don't make the bullets 3D. The color choices are also very poor.GaijinPunch wrote: There are worse. Gradius V and Ikaruga are two of my favorite shmups and they'll last you a long time trying to 1CC them, unless you're crazy good. Border Down is good, Triggerheart Exelica is good although a bit easy, Psyvariar is also pretty good although it plays kind of differently. Oh yeah, and Under Defeat is very good although the scoring is kind of weird.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I'm not a big R-type fan so I wouldn't really recommend Final, but if it's your kind of game then I bet it will be enjoyable.
