Ahh...don't even get me started on these new/hip/trendy/stupid terms.

I also dislike Bling-Bling, also "Pimping" a ride, sounds dumb as fuck to me!
I fucking HATE being called "Dogg". Back in my day, it was "Man", and that was just fine.
Sup, is pretty annoying as well.
Basically any common trendy "Rap" associated lingo. "aiyt"?

I also can't stand someone who talks like their from the ghetto, when they obviously aren't.
I swear, a manager where I work actually refered to me as "Dogg".
I was like, "Whatevah Beeyatch!" (just kidding)

White people, Mexican people, please don't talk like this. Its only cool if youre black, or possibly from the ghetto, which most aren't.

Most people suffer from severe identity crisis these days.

I agree.

And you know something, guys? You have given me the guts to post something I had in my head for long.

I REFUSE to believe that Mexican identity is getting a big ass truck to show off, blaring that narco-crap music ("Hey, look at me, I got me some big ass bass speakers" "What!? I can't hear what you said because of the deafening bass of your goddamn speakers!"), wearing the flag as if it was some sort of commercial logo, or those shirts with the virgin of Guadalupe (What's the point of wearing her effigy if you don't follow what her son, Jesus, taught to everyone?). Sure, keeping your traditions is fine, but you don't see the Irish rubbing on everyone's face how Irish they are, how much beer helps them keep their identity (Not that it does, I'm being sarcastic there.). Do Italian-americans become less Italian if they are not named Vito? Or if they don't like pasta or don't like to greet their friends with a kiss on each cheek? (I'm talking about stereotypes).

I just ate a tamale my mother brought from a mexican market here in Phoenix. (Yummy, I must say) Am I more mexican now? Will I become less mexican if I had eaten sushi or a burger? Of course not. What dilutes your identity, whatever your ethnicity is, is following all those crappy trends that have been marketed to us through time. (I'm sick of seeing my sister in law's family watch only Univision. I'd forgive them if they watch Telemundo, as it's more varied. :P)

You don't need to wave the mexican flag around town (and degrade what it symbolizes) to be mexican. (A bumper sticker is perfectly harmless, though.) You don't *need* P-Diddy on your cell or like rap only to be afroamerican. (Mind you, if there is something I admire about black musicians is many of the examples of blues and jazz through 20th century) You are who you are because you choose to be who you are. Not because someone tells you who to be by doing this, or wearing that. (Well, notwithstanding genetics. But to quote MGS, you genes cannot tell you who you are. Only what you can become.)

If I have said more than I should, or offended anyone, I apologize in advance.

I agree with you Spec, its all "trendy MTV bullshit". People need to stop being sheep, and start being themselves. Have "pride" in who you are, and not because you've got something to prove.

It almost happend in the 80's...when even chicks from New Jersey thought that they were "Valley Girls"...gag me with a spooon! Oh muh Gawahd!

LOL, 100% agreed. Though if I'm overanalyzing the word "shmup" it is only because of this thread. It's just a word I don't use and I don't use it because I already had a word that I was using to describe the same thing. Shooter is to shmup as jewelry is to bling.

Where in that thread does it say the word is officially banned? I just read that commment by the guy who dislikes the word. :?

And if they did ban it, then whoever did so REALLY has too much time on their hands.

@ Specineff: Thanks for the most sensible off-topic post of the year! :D

I agree almost 100% on it (everyone uses/makes symbols to show out their identity though --> I love to wear orange as the national color during Football World Cup or European Cup times )!

Shooter is to shmup as jewelry is to bling.
Please leave it ok! Your comparison can be crippled in many ways... :P
It's ok to not use "shmup" as a term, but hating it... :?

'Shmup' works better as a verb and adjective, though.

Personally, I never use "shmup" verbally. Coming from my experience, it sounds a little wierd trying to pronounce it. I prefer to call them "shooters," and reserve "First Person Shooters" for their respective games.

To me, "shmup" can be (conveniently) used as alternative method to pronounce "shooter," and nothing more, just like (for lack of a better example) saying "wow" could be referring to "World of Warcraft" (which I also never verbally say save for the occasional pun with it).

By the way, did you guys check out Brandon's impression ofShikigami no Shiro II as well? It's a lot better than what he said about Ketsui, and just from reading the article, I can agree with him on why he treated it as badly as he did.

At this point I think he was just blowing off some steam and it's time this was given a rest. After I joined their forum and posted what I thought about this I was treated well. Plus, the Ketsui review is not as bad as I thought it was although I'm still a little in "huh" mode over the fact Brandon thought it was "too easy" and didn't deserve a home port. :?

Err, isn't Shikigami no Shiro 2 a lot easier than Ketsui though? Never played Ketsui but Shikigami 2 wasn't very hard at all thanks to the slowdown.

Puts on a metal/thrasher wig, grabs his own axe, clumsily wails on his brother's flying V black gibson guitar and gets ready to fight.

Yaaarrrr!
