Slowest/fastest ships in any shmup?

Post by Ed Oscuro »

Bringing my question in IRC to the Forum.

Rules: shouldn't be a trackball or mouse game, should be an arcade game.

Slowest games mentioned thus far: Raiden III, Tiger Heli, Flying Shark.

Fastest: Dark Sword from Raiden Fighters 2? Gradius games? :D

Seems to be moving about twice as fast as the helicopter from Tiger Heli, no joke :D

Also, a Gradius game without any powerups = horrendously slow

I swear in most Seibu Kaihatsu shmups the ship speed ruins the game for me.

How does B-Type Miyamoto from Battle Garegga stack up? Is he faster in BG than he is in the Mahou games? Some of the TG-16 shooters with adjustable speeds had some insanely zippy ships at full throttle too. Super Star Soldier in particular I remember being ultra-quick.

Selecting speed #4 in Dangun Feveron PCB is fast!...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

If you try out the actual PCB or arcade Rom of Dangun Feveron (aka Feveron SOS for the International version) by trying speed #4 setting with your chosen ship, now that's blazing fast! ^_~

Reminds me of the fastest speed setting of the classic shmup game of Blazing Lazers/Gunhed for the PC Engine/Turbografx-16 console platforms -- and this was selectable "on the fly" (via simply pressing the 'Select' button on the joypad itself) and no needed "speed power-up" icons to pick up anyways..... ^_~

Fastest would probably have to be TwinBee. There is no upper bound to how fast your ship can get. After a dozen or so blue bells, your ship pretty much is impossible to maneuver.

Maybe it was Blazing Lazers I was thinking of... Though, Super Star Soldier is pretty damn quick as well ^_^

Is there a speed cap on any of the Konami shooters? (Salamander, Gradius, Parodius, etc.).

The only one I have any experience with is Gradius V, which maxes out at 5. At 5 speed ups, it changes to "unspeed" which will loop you back to nothing. I can easily enough check Salamander 2 though ^_^

Edit: Oh yeah... Forgot about the different powerup system in the Salamander games. I only got up to 5 speedups before I got myself killed =/

Edit2: If anything, Twinbee Yahhoo! maxes out at 4-5 or so. I wasn't paying attention, just suddenly noticed it was giving me the big bonus and wasn't speeding me up anymore.

In Gradius I think you can get up to.. 6 or 7 speed-ups, can't remember for sure. Then the speed-up item just gets blank (like the laser item gets blank when you get laser). It's ridiculous fast indeed.

I believe Parodius do the same.

In Gradius V the speedup goes back to 'init speed' after a bunch of them.

For slowest ship, I nominate either Raiden III or any Vic Viper with no speedups.

Do we count special circumstances? Because in PoFV, Youmu holding the slow button down while moving through overlapping slow fields from the... girl... who makes slow fields (I'm bad with Japanese names), moves pretty damn slow.

Not counting games where you can speed up, Deep Blue and Legion are about as slow as Tiger Heli (maybe slightly faster, but much, much slower compared to enemy speeds). Ghost Pilots is faster but going across the more-than-1-screen width of the playing field takes even longer than in Tiger Heli.

You can't get any slower than Sinistron on the TG16.
It's like you're swimming through molasses in that game.

Oh boy. NES port of Gradius. No matter how many powerups I pump into 'Speed Up', there doesn't seem to be an end to the madness!

If I recall correctly, Ghost Pilots on the NeoGeo had some ridiculously slow fighters in it.

Dangar Ufo Robo's main robot speed is terribly low compared to that of those pesky little enemy drones and bullets. Very annoying! Takes dodging to a new level. The game is cool though. I wish that applied in Ghost pilots too

The NES Gradius' Vic Viper can get ridiculously fast. So fast that I don't think it'd be possible to play effectively without doing a tool assisted run.

When I first begun playing Gradius on the MSX, like... oh, 18 years ago (Yeah, I was a little kid back then), I would always grab ALL speed-ups, then the missile, then the laser, then go for the options.

I'd pick them up in the order, and I would alywas grab every speed-up. For a kid, it seemed obvious that the faster the ship was, the better.

Then my dad, noticed I was doing this and told me something like "Do you always get all the speed-ups? You don't need it, you should get the laser first"

Yeah, nothing like a father-son talk about Gradius.

Level 3 of Nemesis 3 MSX is a bitch without speed-ups. It's probably the worst Gradius level ever without speed-ups, aside speed levels.
