Slowest/fastest ships in any shmup?
Bringing my question in IRC to the Forum.
Rules: shouldn't be a trackball or mouse game, should be an arcade game.
Slowest games mentioned thus far: Raiden III, Tiger Heli, Flying Shark.
Fastest: Dark Sword from Raiden Fighters 2? Gradius games? :D

Seems to be moving about twice as fast as the helicopter from Tiger Heli, no joke
Also, a Gradius game without any powerups = horrendously slow

Selecting speed #4 in Dangun Feveron PCB is fast!...
If you try out the actual PCB or arcade Rom of Dangun Feveron (aka Feveron SOS for the International version) by trying speed #4 setting with your chosen ship, now that's blazing fast! ^_~
Reminds me of the fastest speed setting of the classic shmup game of Blazing Lazers/Gunhed for the PC Engine/Turbografx-16 console platforms -- and this was selectable "on the fly" (via simply pressing the 'Select' button on the joypad itself) and no needed "speed power-up" icons to pick up anyways..... ^_~

Is there a speed cap on any of the Konami shooters? (Salamander, Gradius, Parodius, etc.).tada wrote:Fastest would probably have to be TwinBee. There is no upper bound to how fast your ship can get. After a dozen or so blue bells, your ship pretty much is impossible to maneuver.

The only one I have any experience with is Gradius V, which maxes out at 5. At 5 speed ups, it changes to "unspeed" which will loop you back to nothing. I can easily enough check Salamander 2 though ^_^
Edit: Oh yeah... Forgot about the different powerup system in the Salamander games. I only got up to 5 speedups before I got myself killed =/
Edit2: If anything, Twinbee Yahhoo! maxes out at 4-5 or so. I wasn't paying attention, just suddenly noticed it was giving me the big bonus and wasn't speeding me up anymore.

In Gradius I think you can get up to.. 6 or 7 speed-ups, can't remember for sure. Then the speed-up item just gets blank (like the laser item gets blank when you get laser). It's ridiculous fast indeed.GaijinPunch wrote:Is there a speed cap on any of the Konami shooters? (Salamander, Gradius, Parodius, etc.).tada wrote:Fastest would probably have to be TwinBee. I believe Parodius do the same.

Oh boy. NES port of Gradius. No matter how many powerups I pump into 'Speed Up', there doesn't seem to be an end to the madness!Shatterhand wrote:In Gradius I think you can get up to.. 6 or 7 speed-ups, can't remember for sure. If I recall correctly, Ghost Pilots on the NeoGeo had some ridiculously slow fighters in it.

When I first begun playing Gradius on the MSX, like... oh, 18 years ago (Yeah, I was a little kid back then), I would always grab ALL speed-ups, then the missile, then the laser, then go for the options.
I'd pick them up in the order, and I would alywas grab every speed-up. For a kid, it seemed obvious that the faster the ship was, the better.
Then my dad, noticed I was doing this and told me something like "Do you always get all the speed-ups? You don't need it, you should get the laser first"
Yeah, nothing like a father-son talk about Gradius.
Level 3 of Nemesis 3 MSX is a bitch without speed-ups. It's probably the worst Gradius level ever without speed-ups, aside speed levels.
