Mars Matrix couldn't be the cause. He's overuses the shield.

I tried to do that, but I would always fail. If I had a group of bells at the right part of the screen and another one at the left part of screen, I would only get the bells from the side that gave me more bells, and ignore the clouds on the other side, most of the time.

I should tried using more speed-ups. Goddamn, I think I could had broke 4.5 million now.

I vote Parsec47 for Famous Manic Week and Hidden Gem Week.
How about:
Seibu: RFJ
Hidden Gem: Omega Fighter
2nd place: [not sure here]
Famous Manic: Dangun

Now that'd be a hoot. Not that I really know much about Omega Fighter; I just assume it's awesome. Aren't you glad I always vote?

Hah.

Suggestion for next year: please don't announce the theme of a week until the voting poll. I'm way too lazy to practice much of anything in advance.

I was kinda thinking the same thing. Added bonus: theme selection whining might be somewhat contained to voting weekends instead of being drawn out over the course of the tournament. But probably not.

Who cares, this tournament sucks.

It makes me want to play MMORPGS instead.

How to get more than 5 million points in the Raiden Fighters series of shooting games, or Basic Medaling

Raiden Fighters 1, Raiden Fighters 2:

The medal system for these two games is initially dependent on your 3 medal levels:

the medals you can get with no slaves (10, 20, 30 ... 90) (tiny silver medals)
the medals you can get with 1 slave (100, 200, 300 ... 900) (small blue medals)
the medals you can get with 2 slaves (1000, 2000, 3000 ... 9000) (green medals)

Each of these medal ranks has a level of 1 to 9, with the corresponding point values attached to each. The medal level is raised by collecting all medals (with at least one medal that corresponds to your medal rank on slave count) on screen before exposing more medals. Dropping any medals in a wave will cause the medal level to not raise, even if you do collect the rest of the remaining medals or expose more, so avoid this if possible.

To get the 10k medals, you have to bring all 3 ranks of medals to level 9 (collecting the level 9 medals is not necessary until the last rank), and collect the wave of level 9 medals for the last medal rank you raise. The next medals that appear will be worth 10k.

100k Mode: To get even higher values of medals, expose at least 9 10k point medals without collecting them. The medal levels can now be raised in a Garegga-like fashion up to 100k, but dropping any medals will reduce the point value to 10k. In Raiden Fighters (1 and 2) the medal level can be preserved Garegga-style by collecting the highest value medal last, but in RFJ they can not.

Raiden Fighters Jet:

Medaling in Raiden Fighters Jet is a bit silly. Airborne Medals will follow the closest slave you possess, and can combine with other medals to become higher ranked medals, from a minimum of 100pts to a maximum of 2048000pts, in which any medal it combines with will be wasted. The airborne medal following you will start to fall off the screen if your last slave is destroyed, but will continue to follow your Slave as soon as you pick up a new one when this happens.

To access an alternative and less tedious medal mode, collect one 2048000pt medal, then expose 9 100pt medals. You now have the 100k medal mode previously described.

How to boot Seibu SPI games

Wait 6-10 minutes (4 if you have a Core 2 Duo 6850 and press the turbo key) until counter goes down to 000. Then set JP1 dipswitch to ON and reset MAME.

I find Parsec47 to be exciting without being stressful (for the most part). Chains max out early, and the game gives out extends like candy, so the occasional fuck-up isn't a huge deal. Claustrophobic horis and anal chain-a-thons are a lot more gut-wrenching, IMHO (zero room for error).

I think that's incorrect. RFJ is the only RF where you cannot rescue your medal values if you drop one, while in RF1 and RF2 you can (and I've done it quite a few times).

I haven't given RF2 much serious time, but I haven't done that successfully in the Japan version, although I might have missed a medal I haven't seen after collecting that. Alluro has pulled it off in the US version.

Nope, works in the Japanese version of RF2 as well. I have a clip of me in the stratosphere stage absent-mindedly missing a medal and then regaining it from a bunch that drop off a destroyed large bomber.

RFJ is the only strict one in the series with regards to medalling. Not surprising, given the faster pace and harder scoring techniques.

Parsec47 isn't stressful, but it's the only game that I've had to stop playing because my hands were shaking too much to use the controller.

Zero Progears, two Bakraids. That is some Einsteining there.
You know, I would've been quite happy to not play a Cave game for Famous Manic Week.

Personal negative thoughts on a few of these hidden gem nominees...

* Whip Rush is a horrible game, it shouldn't be in any week where we talk about "gems".

* Metal Black has had Saturn and PS2 ports, it's actually a fairly known game. It's also not very good compared to other Taito shooters.

* Zero Wing is absurdly famous -- remember that damn video? -- and it's not a gem, either.

* Air Buster is listed on here twice. Unlike the above, it's not a terrible game... although I'd be hard-pressed to call it a gem, either. We should be looking at games that were ahead of their time, not games that were merely good for their time.

* Varth is another dud. We may as well put Satan's Hollow on this list.

* Kingdom Grandprix isn't hidden. It's also one of Raizing's lesser games, which is probably why it's less-played than others. Doesn't deserve to be in a hidden gem week.

All the high tier players are going to vote for it, so the only logical conclusion for the Images is to vote in an extremely shitty game with pretty graphics.

Gallop!

This is not to say Viper Phase 1 is a shitty game, it's just fucking hilarious to see all the bad players/noshows who voted VP1 get toasted even harder.

My opinion > your opinion. : )

Rabio Lepus/Rabbit Punch would be a nice choice. I thought Hyper Duel was a bit too easy to clear. I think The Game Paradise has slightly messed up graphics in MAME still, it's not that big of a deal though. That would be interesting to play too.

You voted for Gunbird, so your opinion is worth 1% less than mine.
