Well probably also a few other devcos, e.g. the PS2 Shienryu 1 port in the Double Shienryu pack also offers a choice of true low res or filtered high res display.
Yep. Add there the Taito-published PS2 XII Stag port. But it's not the norm.
I don't see this as a "problem" at all, since Dragon Blaze looks great. If they made Mushi less blurry that's okay with me, as long as it plays right. Anyway, it's a port, not the original, so you can't expect it to look exactly like the original game. They do what they gotta do to make it play on the console, which is inferior to the arcade machine.
You indeed can expect to look like the original game in terms of on-screen display. A PS2 is as true low res, RGB-friendly as any PCB. Remember, RGB is the key if you want to say if something looks "great" or not.
i'm not too familiar with filters and what not, are there side by side shots of any given game so that i can see how bad it is?
was PS2 metal slug 3 filtered? it looks good to me but then i don't have the MVS.
It's not easy to find good snapshots in the 'net to show a true low res, RGB picture display. Check this:
See the scanlines? That's 'cause it's true low res.
And nope. PS2 MS3 is not true low res and yep, it's filtered.
No it doesn't. And ESPGaluda doesn't either.
Yep, they do. They're scaled-up from the tate picture display.
Neither the PGM hardware nor Cave's new SH3-based hardware is more powerful than the PS2.
Cave's SH3-based system is indeed more powerful than the PS2 to handle a large number of sprites since it's customized to do that.
Any arcade port of a 2D shooter has the potential to look just like the original, especially with the capabilities of modern consoles.
The truth is that, besides the DC and the PS2 no other current console has true low res capabilities.
Regardless, I have a feeling Cave will exercise more control over the port's quality than X-nauts have (does anybody know exactly who ported the games for the Psikyo collection packs?).
That's a good question, but who cares since they're emulated. I discovered the other day that the PS2 ports/emulations of the Rockman arcade games were made by an European team. And it wouldn't be rare that the forthcoming CP-S II to PS2 ports (as Vampire DC) will indeed be using the emulation program from that team. And believe me, it's better Cross Nauts just let others do the ports.
