Not to just keep posting and posting, but 2005 is definitely becoming one hell of a year for shmups:

-Trizeal (DC)
-Mushihimesama (PS2)
-Dragon Blaze (PS2)
-Raiden III (PS2)

(could even throw Giga Wing Generations on here if you wanted)

Hell, some of these games should be on my top 25. Last year was impressive with Espgaluda and Gradius V, but HOLY CRAP, this year is burning a hole in my wallet!

And yeah, who said the PS2 wasn't a great console for shmups? It is now!

If Cave is handling the port, this info would match with the rumor of ex-Razing staffs working with IBARA. So we would have ex-Razing people with IBARA and Cave veterans on Mushi port. Just a little speculation.

Preordered, anyways.

That has been the general consensus, but you're right, unless there's a pre-order option, it is impossible to say with certainty.

...what? Neither the PGM hardware nor Cave's new SH3-based hardware is more powerful than the PS2. This isn't an issue regarding capabilities; it's purely one about presentation and whether developers care enough to make a game display in its native resolution. It would have been perfectly possible with the Psikyo packs, given the games' 320x224 native res, which PS2 does easily support. Developers must have an extreme case of laziness for them not to support a resolution for which they wouldn't have to resize any graphics. Any arcade port of a 2D shooter has the potential to look just like the original, especially with the capabilities of modern consoles.

Regardless, I have a feeling Cave will exercise more control over the port's quality than X-nauts have (does anybody know exactly who ported the games for the Psikyo collection packs?).

I can't recall any such sites off the top of my head, but MS3 is a particularly icky example of what can go wrong. It's scaled-up and runs in high resolution at 30fps, so you should see a lot of flickering and interlaced trails when the screen scrolls or enemies move. MVS/AES MS3 runs at 30fps, too, but it runs in its native low resolution, so there's no flickering or interlacing.

Oh, here's an example: http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/doc ... aito17.jpg

See the interlacing and breakup? That happens between frames in PS2 MS3, as well as in all of the Psikyo packs, though it's not as pronounced when the game runs at 60fps.

Maybe the problem is with 2D sprites. Aren't they too much RAM dependant? PS2 could be a more advanced hardware overall, but doesn't have sufficient RAM to efficiently backup so many bullets on-screen. But I don't know how much RAM those PCBs have to compare.

Remember Saturn + RAM cartridge vs PS1 running Capcom VS ports.

Well probably also a few other devcos, e.g. the PS2 Shienryu 1 port in the Double Shienryu pack also offers a choice of true low res or filtered high res display.
Yep. Add there the Taito-published PS2 XII Stag port. But it's not the norm.

I don't see this as a "problem" at all, since Dragon Blaze looks great. If they made Mushi less blurry that's okay with me, as long as it plays right. Anyway, it's a port, not the original, so you can't expect it to look exactly like the original game. You indeed can expect to look like the original game in terms of on-screen display. A PS2 is as true low res, RGB-friendly as any PCB. Remember, RGB is the key if you want to say if something looks "great" or not.

It's not easy to find good snapshots in the 'net to show a true low res, RGB picture display. Check this:

Image

See the scanlines? That's 'cause it's true low res.

And nope. PS2 MS3 is not true low res and yep, it's filtered.

No it doesn't. And ESPGaluda doesn't either.
Yep, they do. They're scaled-up from the tate picture display.

Neither the PGM hardware nor Cave's new SH3-based hardware is more powerful than the PS2.
Cave's SH3-based system is indeed more powerful than the PS2 to handle a large number of sprites since it's customized to do that.

Any arcade port of a 2D shooter has the potential to look just like the original, especially with the capabilities of modern consoles.
The truth is that, besides the DC and the PS2 no other current console has true low res capabilities.

Regardless, I have a feeling Cave will exercise more control over the port's quality than X-nauts have (does anybody know exactly who ported the games for the Psikyo collection packs?).
That's a good question, but who cares since they're emulated. I discovered the other day that the PS2 ports/emulations of the Rockman arcade games were made by an European team. And it wouldn't be rare that the forthcoming CP-S II to PS2 ports (as Vampire DC) will indeed be using the emulation program from that team. And believe me, it's better Cross Nauts just let others do the ports.

I have over $700 coming back from Uncle Sam so I'm covered. 8)

And I'm a JAMMA gamer who goes between playing games on RGB and composite so the filter thing is of no issue to me.

Nope, it's great and the port is adequate. People should really get over the 30 frames per second and try it out. It's totally playable, as I've been doing for a few days.
Thank you! Agreed! And the bullet curtains in Level 5 would make a Psyvariar player swoon! :)

If people try and justify conversions like Gigawing generations then it will simply give developers even less incentive to make future ports as good as possible.

I can't fathom how people can call something adequate when essentially it runs like a game thats badly emulated with frameskip.

Anyway its great news about Mushi and I've just payed for the pre-order :D

Do you need to pay NCS something to be on the preorder? I'm hoping I'm not just on an "alert" list by e-mailing them. If they require a small payment for a preorder then I will need to contact them again.

NCS never charges until a game ships, nor do they require deposits.

Thank you for that post.
GWG is a mediocre port at best. The fact that people are so defensive about GWG is highly amusing.

I played GWG for about 2 hours and put it away (for good). I have more fun with TRIZEAL or BATTLE GAREGGA.

Having said that, anyone want to trade my nearly mint copy of GWG for PSIKYO 3: DRAGON BLAZE? PM me if you want to do the trade.

They're not reading my posts on this forum, so don't worry.

Because I'm playing it without a problem, it gives me the options I'm accustomed to (score attack), and it suffers from no playability problems that truly bad port (Night Raid) does. That's "adequate," which I can take.

I definitely preorder it too, i'm now hoping that Taito or Cave decides to port IBARA for PS2, also for Raiden 3 would be icing on the cake.

I wouldn't worry too much about the quality of the GWG port as it relates to Mushihimesama. GWG was on Taito's Type-X hardware, Mushi isn't. Now, if we're talking potential future Type-X ports (Raiden III, Shikigami 3, Homura) there might be more cause for concern. Heck, with Type-X being WinXP based it wouldn't surprise me if at least some of those games got PC releases (and maybe NO console release).

Actually, there is some filter or resolution change on PS2 port of XII Stag. It's not so sharp as G-Net original. I don't stress over this stuff unless it gets 'movement blurry' though, like PS2 rev Metal Slug 4 for example.

Having never played the arcade version of Night Raid, I've been wondering if the controls were that loose in the original...maybe we'll be able to find out once it's available on MAME?

In any case, I haven't played GWG in either format, but if a port is described as merely "adequate" by someone who's a fan of the series, I'm hesitant to pay the full 60 bucks for it.

It really isn't bad at all. I went from the MVS version to the PS2 version and it didn't bother me. I think the PS2 version looks really good and I can't remember to have seen any of the problems you describe. At least not something that ruins it, at all.

That doesn't mean they automatically look like shit. I can't believe anyone would say with a straight face that Galuda or DAI-OU-JOU look like shit in yoko! They may look worse than in TATE but worse than TATE is not the same as shit. Learn to look at things with some perspective people! Dammit.

Maybe they could make those of us with good HDTVs happy and give us progressive scan for the game too. Galuda looks great, but I can notice the interlacing at certain times playing it, even during the explanation demo when you start the game.

Thank-fucking-you. I thought I was the only sane person around here. I'm playing GWG without a problem as well. And enjoying it a lot.
