Replays that cause narcolepsy

Post by Twiddle »

Once I realized how little the players in Touhou games have to move, I started almost falling asleep during watching them.

The Raiden 1 and 2 INH replays have a similar effect because you're watching the same thing being done every 4 minutes.

Just beat me to it. I've been starting to play this a bit again the past few days so I thought I'd dig out the TAC No-miss replay for some tips. Bad idea. After watching probably the dullest boss milking I'd ever seen, I decided to give the rest a miss. The stages themselves are OK though.

Agreed. The touhou games are funner than they look though. And even replays of fairly interesting games to watch (like Ikaruga, or DOJ) have a tendency to make me feel sleepy.

Watch extra mode replays. Short and ridiculous.

I know this is probably heresy, but I struggle through most replays that aren't named Dangun Feveron.

Let's hope that isn't affected by the "Fortune Cookie Rule"

....for some reason I'm being an ass today.

Anyway, most replays are pretty damn boring unless they show you some technique or nuance you weren't aware of.

I never liked the idea of boss milking.

In my own opinion, if a game requires "milking" in order to score high, there's something flawed about it's scoring system.

Milking never seems impressive, overly difficult, or much fun to me.

I play the Strikers games alot, but I just refuse to do THAT. I dont have the extreme patience for it.

Oh, and as for Dangun Feveron......

I finally got to see a "superplay" with that Uo-poko thing or whatever it is.

And that is officially the STUPIDEST replay I've ever watched.

Oh sure, it's a high score...... but most of the enemies dont even get a chance to FIRE. I think that guy in the one I saw, went through like the first 2 and a half stages, and almost NOTHING (aside from bosses, which died too fast anyway) actually SHOT at him.

Just stage 2, I counted exactly 3 blue lasers at the start, and then NOTHING up until right near the boss.

If that's what's required to score high in that, well, I'll just play my own way, thank you.

Milking is part of the risk/reward system.

Well, I think it'd be more interesting to me, if the boss attacks started changing the longer you let them go. AKA, the longer you milk them, the more dangerous they get.

But I never see that happening.....

I've done milking before, but I dont do it now cause I just get tired of it. It always feels like Im waiting for all these little things to come and get shot. And Im not exactly fulla patience, lol.

Risk VS Reward is great, but I prefer something more along the lines of DOJ's Hyper Beam: Fire THAT at a boss, and you can get ALOT of hits and points..... but if you use it, the fight gets really berserk; Lotsa points available, but if you want them the challenge increases drastically..... but I dont have to WAIT for little things to fly around, and it dont make the boss take LONGER to beat.

Maybe Im just impatient, but it's never a type of scoring I enjoy.

This happens in every Sonic Wings/Psikyo game, Darius Gaiden, and a lot more. Even if they don't get harder, if the boss is already hard it's more things you have to dodge.

I don't think it's boring as much as it is frustrating to invest that extra time if you eventually die.

That´s the Dangun replay I talked about, but to be fair, he just perfectly memorized the enemy placement. This is why I find the replay "absurd" - if you don´t know the game, it looks absolutely ridiculous. The game looks and plays differently if you play through it as a non-top player. The player just made this game his bitch, this is why it looked so weird.

Well, I can understand that, but......

Still, the replay just seemed silly to me, and I do play that game quite alot.

At least with something like DoDonPachi, memorizing everything for chaining doesnt then DROP the challenge level like a rock.

I think that's probably my only beef with Dangun Feveron; it handles sorta like Raiden 3's scoring, the faster you blow the heck outta an enemy, the more DMs they'll drop.

I dunno, I dont usually see it as more things to dodge......

Cause wether or not I milk the boss, those extra foes WILL still show up and shoot at me; the attacks from them are gonna be a part of that fight regardless. Playing Strikers I, there just isnt any real way (usually) to smack the things BEFORE they fire at me; so those shots are part of the fight from the beginning.

But if I do the milking, all that really happens is the same section of that fight will repeat a number of times before Im done..... that's all, really.

Hmm, I guess I just dont have patience enough to do it, really, is all it is.

That and I find it rather dull to watch in a replay vid.

Why hasn't anybody carved a statue of him out of the moon? He deserves it.
