Deceased Shmup companies...
Deceased Shmup companies
How many of the old traditional Shmup companies have long turned into stardust?
Some which I can think of:
Compile
TechnoSoft
Toaplan
But were Complile / Toaplan in fact the same company with changed name?

Re: Deceased Shmup companies...
Compile sorta lives on as Compile Heart. Many Toaplan people split for Cave and some other shmup devs (Takumi is another one) when Toaplan went bankrupt. Compile and Toaplan are in no way related if you were trying to say so...ST Dragon wrote:But were Complile / Toaplan in fact the same company with changed name?
Seibu Kaihatsu is sorta gone, they've just been licensing Raiden out to this other team Moss for the last few games. I guess they could always develop another shmup someday but they seem done with that, fine with just slapping their name on the box.

For some reason I always had the vague idea that Compile was in fact the continuation of Toplan but with a different name. So thanks for clearing that out for me.
Compile Heart? Do they still develop shooters?
... And what about IREM, didn't the state that R-Type Final would be their last shooter?

Yeah, most of the usual gang from Raizing didn't show up in the credits there (it's more or less people who had credits in Bloody Roar and Mars Matrix)
Another oddity is that the 1944 team mostly had people who did Brave Blade.

Something I've always wondered, does anyone know why 8ing / Raizing sort of has two names separated by that '/', and a separate logo for each? Are Eighting and Raizing two different dev teams or parts of the same company, or is it just a strange use of the '/' and it's really just all one name that should technically never be separated? Thanks!

Yes indeed!CIT wrote:Just a few:

Quite sad, really.
(Success)
No Psyvariar 3 sequel I guess, pity!
(Seibu Kaihatsu)
At least that Moss Company is still developing on their Raiden franchise.
I’m rather surprised to here that about TAITO though, their RayForce/Strom/Crisis games were one of the best all time trilogies, some of the few to actually have a deep story line.
Same for: Capcom, 8ing/Raizing & Irem. Sad loss!
But as for:
- Namco
- Yumekobo
- Hudson
- Kaneko
- Squaresoft
It’s been ages since they last developed any descent Shooter, last one I can remember for Yumekobo is Blazing Star (1998)! So their choice on abandoning the genre can be considered natural I guess.
But what about Konami, any chance they’ll be making a new Parodius shmup on any of the 3 new consoles? When you complete the Parodius games, it says in the ending sequence: “We Love Shooting Games!”
Didn’t they also announce Gradius 6 for the PS3 ages ago?

Never change, ST Dragon.
Why bother post then, Rob?

They did announce a new Gradius for the PS3, but didn't mention if it was going to be Gradius 6 or something different. On all releases mentioning the game it simply said Gradius - PS3.

Gradius PS3 has been delayed or cancelled completely AFAIK.
The niche that has become shmups, the shrinking of the amount of developers just means games will get better. The amount of money one company can make is much larger as they have become closer to a monopoly.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Well, Taito made their last shooter, Raycrisis, in 1998 too. So what's the difference?
