@Rob: So you'd be willing to sacrifice Psikyo week under the premise it was used last year?
Here's a suggestion (two, actually):
-micro hit box week
-huge hit box week
But yeah, even if I wasn't a Cave fan, one must admit, they're pretty much the last company making the damn games. Seems logical to dedicate a week to them. We could always have "porn mahjong" week to celebrate Psikyo.

Another vote for Konami week, especially since I just got the Gradius Deluxe Pack on Saturn. For Taito week, I would especially like doing Rayforce and G-Darius. I wouldn't mind a GB b/w week with Nemesis, Gradius: IA/Nemesis II, Twinbee Da!!, Sagaia, and Solar Striker either. Another vote for Retro week too.
I wouldn't mind a Psyiko week, though I'm probably a bit biased because I just got Strikers 1945 1 for my Saturn.

I don't think anyone has suggested another Psikyo week (insert "for a reason" here). I wouldn't suggest it and I think the only games that should reappear are a few non-winners from the non-developer weeks. No Psikyo, no Raizing, no Cave.GaijinPunch wrote:@Rob: So you'd be willing to sacrifice Psikyo week under the premise it was used last year?
Hell.-huge hit box week
It was logical. Last time. There is a 25 year+ history of the genre, so I don't think it is necessary or logical to give them a week every time the competition comes up. There are hundreds of other games to choose from. But yeah, even if I wasn't a Cave fan, one must admit, they're pretty much the last company making the damn games. Also, was it agreed that the tournament be shortened to five weeks? That's not that many.

I would consider this like an awards show.... focusing on the mainly new things (not possible w/ the MAME only rule, really) and celebrating the old only in minority. IE -- one week.Rob wrote: It was logical. Last time. There is a 25 year+ history of the genre, so I don't think it is necessary or logical to give them a week every time the competition comes up. i think my memory is tainted by the input/video you distributed last time (somewhere in the second loop, no?)Icarus wrote:Shatterhand wrote:actually, Cyvern was in Ramus' weekly shmeet... and yeah, Icarus dominated it. Obviously I'd like Raizing to return (and to some extent Cave), but it'd be nice to see other developers get the nod for selection this time around. Taito, Seibu, Konami, Capcom and other smaller devs have a nice selection of games that would make for good competition.
And we're already getting the "it's Cave or I'm not playing" people popping in already. Great. *eyes roll*
I have no sig whatsoever.
Correct. Stage 2-4, 14mil+.captain ahar wrote:i think my memory is tainted by the input/video you distributed last time (somewhere in the second loop, no?)
However, that score was done after the end of the playing week, so it didn't count in the tournament. Check STGT '05 - Cyvern thread, and current score thread. I was pretty frustrated by inconsistency, and decided to kill the rest of the final day resting and watching some films. Took a couple of credits at the end of the night (after playing week end), and pulled off the 14mil+.
I'd love to return to it and maybe get a 2-ALL, but not right now.
In my opinion Cave and Raizing are probably the most important and favourite companies for the score-centric shmupping scene. Therefore I can really see why we could include weeks for these developers every year.
But yet I think if we include these weeks by default we limit our variation. And, yeah game choices will become pretty predictable. They were already somewhat predictable last year, like namakoteam proved us. I don't wanna mock you guys for practising early or anything,
Just wanna point out that game selections just by company are somewhat predictable, but returning developer weeks are even more predictable. As we already know the results of last year's STGT polls. Making the math even more predictable. Offcourse there is still the possibility that the games popularity would turn out different this time...
That's why I think mixxed developer weeks are a better solution. Like the proposed "Last year's second place", or a "famous developer week" / "manic week". Along these lines. I think to keep the STGT fresh, we should also have new week themes each year and try to avoid getting stuck with what we already had. Though I am not to say that we MUST exclude Cave / Raizing Week. I just wanted to point out that those developers might not have a week on its own in this year's STGT. But you'll certainly can expect games from these deveoplers to appear in one or more polls.
That's my opinion so far.

what Rob and Edge said.
and what Maxi said too. Yeah, please, give me Space Manbow AND Knightmare. Yeah. Please.
I would really dig a 8-bits week
BrianC's WWII/post WWII week suggestion is better than my "Airplane week".
Gigawing ships are airplanes, right? I've been playing Gigawing Generations lately, and in spite of the port problems , it's a sweet awesome game. We have to put the first Gigawing here somewhere, even if just to please Rob

Since we played my very favorite game last year, I think I should mostly stay quiet in these discussions. But...
I love Edge's idea of theme weeks. Some first thoughts:
bomb-dropping week (not sure what else to call shmups like Souky, Xevious, Layer Section...)
bullet-reflecting week
cute-em up week (what could be more cheerful and fun than that?)
I'm sure the following would be really popular:
memorizer week
Personally, I think a Doujin week is too fringe for this mainstream event.

yeah, I would scrap all the "developers week" and go just for themed weeks.
And I obviously would LOVE an MSX week.
We could have Aleste 2 and Space Manbow, as they are the top class MSX games, Knightmare because it has already been mentioned, Gall Force because it's the only MSX shmup I can remember that has something that resembles a score system (Athoulgh a pale one, I must admit) and Gulkave, just because it would be fun to see if anyone is brave enough to endure all 32 levels of it./
OH hell, scrap all this voting and stuff, let's just do an MSX Shooting Tournament.
Now, seriously, do we have to stick with Mame only? It would be nice to play games that are non-arcade... I still think Beamrider would be a blast, I am sure the Mega-Drive has some worthy shmups, and of course I would have tears of joy if we had an MSX game (or even an Amiga game, though it's a bitch to emulate..) played.

Voting is boring!
I'll throw in my vote for cute-em-up week!
Also, if there's a Seibu week, make sure it's the last week. Because like the song says, you have to Seibu the best for last.

If it's freeware (like X.X's stuff), why would this even be an issue? And hell, what's wrong with holding a score comp for a demo (like the first 2 levels presented in the Kamui demo)? It's basically the equivalent of a Caravan Mode. Doujin does not have to equal obscure Comiket Product.professor ganson wrote:Personally, I think a Doujin week is too fringe for this mainstream event.
First, there is the issue of compatibility. In last year's tournament, there were players who had problems getting MAME to run, so there is no guarantee that a demo of some doujin will be able to run as well, freeware or not. Nine times out of ten, freeware and demos are unoptimised and buggy. I've had Hitogata Happa refuse to load even though my PC can run the latest commercial PC games. Radio Zonde is slow and jerky. And that's just as an example.Kiken wrote:If it's freeware (like X.X's stuff), why would this even be an issue? Then there are the arcade/console-only players, people who don't touch PC games or emulators at all. Granted, all you'd need to do is get a PC joypad, but at this moment in time, it's still very short-notice to ensure that every possible participant has access to and is capable of running a doujin game.
If you're going to use doujin in this tournament, at least start compiling player data and a possible shortlist a long time before the actual themes and registration threads appear.
