Dead Moon was brought to us by Natsume.

The game is horizontal scroller and is similar to Darius style game play. even has boss battles like Darius where you are swicth directions when at boss battles. Also employs the use of 'bombs' - unusual for a horizontal. Speed is adjust by pausing and then select speed in pause menu. Good music too!

Is a good solid game and does nice paralax scrolling for TG16 :D
I normally think of Dead Moon kind of like a bastard child of Darius & Thunder Cross. It's a solid, fun, if somewhat uninspired shmup that is well worth your time to play, if only because it's a solid shmup from the horzi heyday.

VC TG-16 emulator

Post by bigbadboaz »

Do the recent TG-16 releases still run in blurry hi-res, or have they updated the emulator? I don't have a Wii but from what I've been told the TG-16 games are the only ones that don't run in the original resolutions...?

It's been years since I played Air Zonk. I loved playing this at Toys r Us when I was a munchkin.

Mm, Air Zonk. Never got to try it before, but I've heard many a good thing about it.

It is pretty fun! And surprisingly tougher than I expected.

Air Zonk is indeed a great game and tough! Far better than the "sequal" - Super Air Zonk: Rockabily Paridise.

The OFLC recently rated Axelay; good news for Australia obviously, and likely Europe as well since they generally share VC releases (not counting the PCE.)

Edit: just noticed Galaga '90 and Blazing Lazers as well.

I downloaded Dead Moon, Blazing Lazers, and Air Zonk last night.

I actually 1LC'd Dead Moon on my first play through.

Air Zonk is a bit trickier than I recall. And Blazing Lazers is sheer BLISS!!!!! Mmmm... with stuff like Blazing Lazers and Nexzr I'm inclined to start leaning towards the PC-Engine Duo as the king of shmups. :o

Is Axelay coming out in the US soon?

ESRB has rated Star Soldier, and Hudson has announced an August release for Galaga '90 in all regions that aren't Japan (which got it some time ago.)

Australia will also be picking up Air Zonk and Dragon Spirit in August.

Edit: Japan will be getting PCE Gradius, Image Fight, and Ordyne next month.

It IS the king of shmups, if you're not into bullet-hell stuff, IMO.

I wanna see some more Compile shmups, dadgummitt! :x Where are Gunnac, Zanac, Space Megaforce, etc?

Star Soldier for the NES was released today in North America.

If I already have Soldier Blade should I bother with this? or would it be like a step backward?

Any more solid news on MSX and NeoGeo for any region? As far as I can tell, the official Japanese page still says service begins summer 2007 but summer is going to be over soon...

This week's PCE awesomeness comes in the form of Galaga '90 (seems we're still stuck with the wrong date) Monday in NA and Friday in Europe. Australia will instead be getting Air Zonk and Dragon Spirit Friday.

No news about MSX or NG that I'm aware of, unfortunately.

I too had an infatuation with Air Zonk and the TG-16 when I was younger. I can remember playing Air Zonk at Toys R Us as I dreamed of owning a TG-16 one day. That day didn't come for many, many years until high school actually, which was many years ago too. Anyway, I jumped at the chance to buy the game when it released on the Wii and I love it. I've already managed to beat it after being stuck on the Land of Drool for a while. I was literally at my last life on the final boss and managed to survive to see the end. I was playing on Normal mode or whatever it's called, I can't remember. I know that Bitter Mode is mean as hell as I played some yesterday and couldn't get past the first boss.

A trio of Neo Geo games have been announced for a September release in Japan (none of which are on topic for this thread: Fatal Fury, World Heroes, and Magician Lord.)

It's a step backward. However, if you like early NES shmups or mid-80's pre-Gradius verts, then you might like it. It's just nothing special.

Gate of Thunder and Super Air Zonk have been announced for all non-Japan regions in October. (Japan will be getting the PCECD version of Gradius II and Cho Aniki instead.)

Yes, if I am Japanese VC users I would wish to have another game instead of an improved version of what I already got.

Anyway, at least we are getting Gate of Thunder and Super Air Zonk and not some other sport, RPG or driving games.

I have to check if I got enough Wii points for Oct. :D

Let's hope this is a hint of great things to come in terms of PCECD releases in the future. I can't help but to think that Lords of Thunder will be on the release list soon. While I'm confident that the CD-based games will play well, it will be interesting to hear how the game music sounds and how large the downloads are. I figure there will be some serious compression in order to make the games manageable.

It's a miracle that my copy of GOT is still in mint condition, considering how much it has been played. The idea of being able to put some of my favorite TG/PCECD games into safe storage, see them upscaled in 480p, and play with a semi-wireless VC controller is worth $8 a game.

Combined with news of Neo Geo games coming soon, the VC is shaping up quite nicely. If only they will improve the trainwreck that is still the VC Shop Menu!

I'm getting tired of waiting for new shmups. I wonder how many Nintendo/Sega rereleases we have to put up with? Most of the Nintendo and Sega games have been released already in compilations on somewhat modern platforms. I think their popular titles section will just be preprogrammed to showcase company titles.
