In theory Lifeforce was kinda a remix of Salamander. If I'm correct that makes it a different game, worthy of a mention? :)

Well, I'm counting Life Force/Salamander as the same, since they are mainly name changes and the powerup bar..........

Something in the back of my head is telling me that Jikkyo Oshaberi Parodius was 2P simultaneous as well, though someone else'll have to confirm that...

✔ Saturn version.
✘ Super Famicom version.

Applicable to both Gokujyou and Jikkyo Oshaberi.

G-Gaiden was 2P?!?

Nah.

????

Er, check again. I have not played it in a couple of years and it's over at my dad's. But, I honestly don't remember it being 2P.

I JUST opened one (i.e. withi nthe last 5 minutes) and it's still sitting on my desk. It sure as shit says 1-2 on the box, and I am darn sure the game is (though I've never tried it).

Gradius Gaiden is 2 player simultaneous, it's just the PSP version that's 1 player only. I've never had anyone play Gaiden with me, but I've accidentally press start on the 2 player side on emulator and there were 2 ships on the screen at the same time (BRILLIANT!).

I used to play Gradius Gaiden a lot with a mate of mine. It was the only shmup I remember he truly enjoying. He didn't gid Gradius V too much though.....

The big advantage of playing Gaiden in 2 players is that the game doesn't have checkpoints anymore.. so if one of you die, the game keep on going (and 5 power-up cells appear instantly so the respawning player can power-up his ship a little)

The MSX Salamander is a bit different from other versions, but still has two players. The interesting thing about the two player mode in the MSX Salamander is that both ships can combine into a ship controlled by both players. If I remember correctly one player controls the ship and the other controls the firing, or something along those lines.

Now if we could just get online, lag-free cooperative player modes on these games...

What's more "interesting" is that the checkpoint system is still on when playing in 2 players mode... if one player dies, BOTH PLAYERS get back to the last checkpoint... which is annoying as hell...

What I don't remember is if both players lose all their weapons, or just the player who died.

Each player also has it's own stock of lives... they are not "shared" as it may seem.

But it was very cool to have 2 simultaneous players at same time, each one being able to have 2 options nonetheless.... it was a feat for an MSX1 game. (Actually, Salamander on MSX is a total feat from the technical point of view.. this and R-Type are IMO the 2 most impressive MSX 1 games - damn shame Irem decided to make R-Type an MSX 1 game instead of making it for the MSX2...)

Yeah, it's not only 2 players, it's probably my single favorite 2 player game of all. It might just be the memories I've built up while playing Gradius Gaiden with buddies (or the killer soundtrack, or the inventive level design, or the depth of gameplay in ship selection and menu bar arrangements), but it's just so much more fun than most multiplayer sidescrolling games IMO.

Just the player who dies loses weapons. Repeatedly sacrificing the other player is a great but dishonest way to gather all the possible weaponry, including the E-pod weapons in the first stage.

Salamander MSX might still be the most advanced two-player shmup ever... besides the combination of two players into one ship, there is also an item called "Option Chain", which distributes the options dynamically between the players, forming a chain of two players and up to 3 options! I'd love to see that feature make a comeback in Salamander 3...
Before Pope John Paul died he decreed that Aliens were also GOD's creatures and we should treat them with respect.

Great to see some ex-MSX owners.

ex-MSX owners my arse, I am a proud MSX2+ owner who still fires it up for a round of Aleste 2 or Space Manbow from time to time :) :) :) :)

Damn robust those things are, I have 3 MSXs , all of them are more than 20 years old, and they all are working greatly. The MSX2+ has some problems with overheating, but that's not much of a serious issue :) Besides this overheating problem (And that's because of the "upgrade" from MSX1 to an MSX2+, which was never supposed to be done in first place), they never gave me ANY problems...

After some research I found out that Parodius 3 (Chatting Parodius) is not dual play on the NES, but is on the PSX and Saturn.......interesting......

Too bad I can't find any replay vids of two player mode, which is what I'm looking for

But I should have enough material for what I'm doing.....here's a hint, it's a takeoff of a popular flash video from a few years back......

I'm not even a non ex-MSX owner. I got in to MSX games via emulation. I have the awesome Konami MSX Ultra Pack for Saturn, which has Salamander in it.
