I agree with ayuh...

if we are going to keep the "3 best scores count for the team overall", we should give a prize for the best score that does not count for the team overall.

This way we still make sure the "low tier" players do their best....

That's just an idea...

I think a sense of shame should work best. Like... if people can't put in a solid effort (doesn't have to be a great or even top 3 team score) maybe don't sign up and water down the teams. So there can be actual team competition.

I like some of those ideas. Be aware that the Red Lantern prize isn't exactly very good. Last time was the N64 Star Soldier. I know there's one or two that may like that game, but it would still be somewhat difficult to snipe individual ranking's lowest score every scoring week and not get caught.

The prize would hopefully not be worth the effort to scout and pre-plan scoring manipulation over a 10 week period. I'd be surprised if somebody really went through the tediousness of arranging that outcome. And if two people have the same idea...well...we'll know why there's a tournament entry of 100 points, huh.

I like shame. Shame is funny. Shame is welcome upon the Red Lantern

Hey let's mock all the low tier players once the competition is over.

Star Soldier 64 is underrated.

Agreed. And give them all prizes consisting of one animated gif of my choosing.

Whether I'm playing or not is going to have a lot more to do with a simple formula involving "how much free time I have" over "how much I hate this game".

Sarcasm aside, it does have one of my favorite caravan modes.

I think that everybody needs to provide their own motivation to keep playing. Sure people can offer prizes but if you aren't willing to put out the time just because you're not on top then don't sign up at all.

Sound like me lol.

Half of the time I get bored and stop playing a shmup after I've almost had a 1cc or something.

I meant, if it came down to the last week, and I was 3rd to last, what's to stop me from submitting a crap score and screwing up my team?

The difference being, that if you're on a team with 6+ members and you submit the lowest score of your team, only the top three scores from your team count towards the points calculation.

Therefore, the only people you screw up by submitting a low score, just to get a cheap prize, is yourself.

Speaking of the Red Lantern, I reckon it should be hideously awful, so monumentally crap that no one in their right mind would want to screw themselves over just to "win" it. That would provide some incentive for all players, even the lower placed ones, to do well.

I agree that anybody who's not self-motivated enough to try probably shouldn't be in the tournament in the first place. After all, this thing is A) voluntary and B) a competition.

That logic doesn't work if there's only two people on your team submitting scores. Hypothetical example, of course. ;)

COMPLETE!!!

Thank you all for contributing. :D

If there's anything else regarding the base rules you feel we need to discuss and it wasn't covered here already, by all means, share your thoughts. If you feel one of the topics already discussed wasn't explored or argued correctly, go ahead and state your case.

However, please don't go into week themes, as you'll probably have to type your suggestions again later; wait until that thread is introduced in a few weeks.

As reference, everything we've ever talked about is on the first page. So if somebody starts an essay fight during the tournament, hopefully somebody can just point to the discussion on this thread to stop drama from asploding.
