On the subject of Takumi, the only scoring system that has downright turned me off is the chaining required for Mars Matrix

I have to agree with you about Mars Matrix. I loved everything about the game except for the chaining. You have to chain in order to upgrade your weapons, and the difficulty of having to memorize so much stuff in order to chain took away from the game's pick-up-and-play factor for me personally. Mucho respect points to those of you who mastered it though.

The thing is, they quite specifically don't just slap a lot of extra zeroes on it - the scores are multiples of ten, which seems to be traditional for whatever reason (and allows continue tracking in some games), but all the other digits are actually being used. I suppose it could be an attempt to obfuscate exactly how many points things are worth, but probably not, considering you're generally only going to care about the first few digits, anyway, as Rob said.

It works, I suppose, considering it's one of the first things most people notice. I do forget sometimes that many of these games still start out in an arcade environment, where anything their attract mode can do to catch the attention of casual passers-by means more income.
